January 11, 2017: Re-Learning

I remember how to drive in the snow, but I haven't really driven in it since 2008 and the last real terrible winter I drove in was late 2006. If you're crossing an intersection on foot and you see me in a car, maybe wait for me to come to a complete stop before you start walking.

        1. I missed that somehow. Best of luck with the move.

I've had to do international apartment hunting, so I feel a version of your pain.

      1. It's a huge pain right now with having to do things within a constrained time, but I expect it to get much better. We got really lucky in finding a house while we were already visiting.

            1. Dido.

as an apropos aside, we had dinner at venerable Santa Fe institution, The Shed while we were there over the holidays. I had the Pollo Adobo, which was pretty tasty.

          1. Chris Jaffe lives in Naperville (IIRC), so he can let you know exactly how old you are. He's also a prof around there somewhere.

            1. My MIL lives in Aurora; we get down thataway often. Perhaps a Chicagoland caucus would be worth exploring some time in the future.

      1. I'm suddenly envisioning a giant, multi-state WGOM game of musical chairs. But, you know, with houses.

    1. My family (minus me, because I was saving for my study abroad trip) once took a trip to Seattle by way of the Grand Canyon and Mexico. They drove up the coast and through that tree (or one of the other ones), where they managed to get their van stuck. There are some fantastic photos of it wedged in the tree.

    2. This makes me very sad. I'd always hoped to get there someday. It's a weird feeling when a bucket list item becomes literally impossible.

I mean, I still want to get there, because if I didn't eventually get to see the sequoias, seven year old me would never forgive me.

    3. We've had officially 1.93 inches of rain in the last 24 hours alone and I know we've had it easy compared to Northern California. When the animals starting lining up 2 x 2, will they then finally admit the drought is over?

      1. Unsurprisingly, Trey's baseball game was postponed. I've seen a forecast of 100% chance of rain tomorrow at gametime. Looks like all 3 games will be washed out this week. In fact, I'm surprised we haven't heard the game tomorrows hasn't been rained out. It is on the road, but I doubt any field in the area will be available to play on even if it stopped raining right now.

      2. relatively dry today. Yesterday, as I was driving in, I listened to the weather forecasts for Heavenly, Squaw Valley, etc. They were predicting 3-5 inches of snow. Per hour. All day. I-80 was closed much of the day but has now reopened over Donner Pass.

        8:50 a.m.:

More than 4 feet of snow fell at some Sierra Nevada ski resorts in the past 24 hours.

Kingvale Resort off Interstate 80 received 4 feet 10 inches in 24 hours and more than 6 feet in the last 48 [hours]. Sugar Bowl received nearly the same amount of snow.

Squaw Valley and Alpine resorts received more than 2 feet of snow in the last 24 hours. However, the resorts were closed Wednesday due to a power outage.

Along Highway 50, Sierra-at-Tahoe resort accumulated 3 feet of snow in the past 24 hours. Sierra-at-Tahoe was also closed Wednesday.

That was on top of ~60 inches of snow last week.

The Yolo Bypass, between my house and Sactown, is an inland sea at the moment, several feet deep (like 8-10), where normally it is farm fields and a diversion canal.

        1. Although, the historical averages may be biased from measuring during an unusually long wet period. Everyone got fooled into thinking California wasn't that dry when it turns out it is.

  1. This story amused me, probably excessively. Jorge Posada in danger of falling off Hall of Fame ballot.

Looking at the numbers, I guess there is a case beyond "look at teh Ringz". He was an outstanding hitter as a catcher (career OPS+ of 121, 16th amongst catchers on JAWS, although there are only 14 catchers in the Hall). But his case reminds me just a wee bit of the Big Apple consternation about Paulie O'Neill (career 120 OPS+, 38.8 rWAR to Posada's 42.7, 59th all-time amongst RFers on JAWS). Posada has a better case than Paulie, but not a dramatically better one, I think.

Posada had a .374 career on-base percentage and a .474 slugging percentage, for an O.P.S. of .848. Among catchers with at least 1,000 career games, just five have a higher O.P.S.: Mike Piazza, Mickey Cochrane, Bill Dickey, Roy Campanella and Gabby Hartnett. All are in the Hall of Fame.

Of course, Baby Jeebus only has 920 career games at catcher on his resume. His career OPS has dropped to 837 (889 as a C, compared to Posada's 868, in 1518 games), but his OPS+ is still at 127, despite the last three years of Just Your Average Joe.

  2. can anyone explain to me what good Verizon Smart Rewards points are? Seems like they are just trawling for customers to buy crap (at not-really-discounted prices).

    1. At 0.014 cents per point, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a less valuable rewards currency.

I looked at this a while back when I was trying to burn up points to buy new Zipps for my bike and concluded it was bogi.

      1. His politics aside, ii does give good interview...

I'm not thrilled with ii being associated with the franchise because I don't agree with his politics, didn't like the fact that he tried to punch out teammates on multiple teams, and seems kinda like a jerk overall, but I'm willing to let my judgments go to see if he can improve the broadcast team.

      1. And for finally having a smidge of diversity. Is Telly Hughes the only African-American they've ever had as part of their on-air talent?

        1. Did Al Newman do some games or pre/post game stuff back when games were on Channel 9 and My29?

          1. I think he was on the coaching staff then, and he was one of the go-to pregame/postgame interviews.

      1. Free Tyus!

Also, I just watched the highlights and they had two Kris Dunn step backs in the package and that move is sick. It sucks that his shot is so, so bad because otherwise that would be an incredible weapon for him.

More importantly, though, it seems like Ricky is getting a bit more free reign to run the offense (I think, anyway, since I can't actually watch the games) and is, unsurprisingly, playing better. I hope this isn't just some illusion I've created because he's had two big assist games in a row, because this Ricky is the best Ricky.
