  1. No offense intended, but why would you go to work if you still have influenza? You could get other co-workers sick.

    1. Because I don't have unlimited sick time, and my company's stance is that working while you're sick is a badge of honor for some reason.

The dizziness is gone, as is the nausea. I'm just stuffed up and coughing a lot. My stepfather has had it for over a month, but I can't miss a month of work.

      1. And because of that "badge of honor", at least you can go in knowing that your co-workers would almost certainly do the same to you if they were in the same situation.

        1. I should add that this practice isn't a company thing, it's a 'merican thing. Work sick! It's the only macho thing to do!

We just had a holiday event (in our store, definitely not company-wide) where everyone's name was on an ornament on a tree in the back, but if you were late or absent, it was pulled. At the end of the period, one remaining ornament would be picked to win a $500 gift card. I ended up having to call in because my wife had a serious one-day migraine and...other sickness thing. She always gets sick for very intense, very short periods of time. Anyway, she was completely non-functional and in a horrible state, so I took care of her after finding someone to cover my shift. This got my ornament removed.

The girl running the event literally could not see the problem with that. It's mystifying.

          1. Yup, it is a pervasive attitude. Some places are better than others, but at every job I've had there's been at least one day where I was sick and asked to take one for the team/rise up/whatever and make it to work.

          2. Totally agree there on the 'murrica thing. I've been lucky over my past couple of jobs in that they encouraged staying home when sick and haven't required using PTO in those situations.

            1. My current job has very generous PTO and doesn't even ask questions if you're sick. And if you're out more than 2 days, it's a conversation between you and HR, not you and your boss (unless you want it to be).

And even if you run out of PTO because you have a chronic illness, non-paid leave is allowed as long as you're able to still do the job.

      2. I guess I was picturing you sicker than you currently are. I get a little hypersensitive on this. My last employer, and current employer (me) are both very forgiving on people calling in sick. In fact, it was about 8 years ago that my past employer cracked down on all managers in the company to stop making people feel bad for calling in sick. Sure, some people may take advantage of a relaxed sick call policy, but after that change, we had fewer people calling in sick, and fewer people complaining of food poisoning. In fact, it has been many years since I have taken a call accusing us of food poisoning. (i suspect most calls of this nature are really flu, or other illnesses and I refer any call to the health department) In my business, we can't afford for people to work sick and get others sick.

Correction: we took one call a few months back from a lady who said the hospital emergency room told her that her husband got food poisoning at our establishment. We called in the local health department. Did a full audit. Tossed any food items that may have been involved. She called back 3 days later to say her husband was in worse shape, went in again, and found out it was actually Lymes Disease. I did not know how to feel. On one hand, we didn't get him sick. On the other hand, bummer for the poor guy.

    2. Two options:

      1. Best Buy is evil
      2. The virus is gone and he just means he's recovering from the damage it did

  2. Did anybody watch the Wolves last night? Andrew Wiggins turned a wide open 3 into a long contested 2 at the end of a 2 point game. We need to just start calling that a "Wiggins."

    1. And that is why I find watching him to be very, very difficult. Just an ugly, inefficient offensive game. I've been pretty solidly in the "trade Wiggins" camp this year, he just doesn't work with the way this team is set up.

      1. He's the anti-Money Ball player. Looks great but basketball IQ is so bad that he's all "potential."

    1. We're good, but large portions of the 9th ward are (again) f'd up. Those folks can't catch a break.

Also, I don't have cancer! Hurray.

    1. There are so many species of Central and South American hummingbirds that I'm not gonna be much help with that. (And I do not have a book on hummingbirds of the world.)
Where exactly are you? Tulum, Mexico?

  3. H'istan gets street cred.

They forget to mention that insurance giant Aetna is looking to pull a G.E. and move HQ to Bo'town because of high State Of taxes.

  4. Twins sign Drew Stubbs to minor league deal. Veteran OF that hits lefties pretty well and is a good enough defender to play CF. Has been average or a little below in CF for his career.

    1. My only problem with this is that, in recent years, I've seen too many guys like him end up getting way too much big league playing time and taking at-bats away from young players. But there's a new front office now, so we'll see.
