March 19, 2017: Baylor

In our pool I went from 1st place to 8th place in one day as I only got 2 of 7 games correct yesterday. However, I still have all final four teams still going, including Baylor, the school my cousin goes to.

In good news, she just agreed to be our live-in nanny this summer. So hats off to her, and go Baylor!

  1. On the subject of nannies, we're dog-sitting right now. My brother's dog Buddy has been staying with his former owners (my mom and stepdad), and now they're on vacation as well so we have him for the weekend.

Yesterday, Buddy got away from Sour Cream and ran about four blocks. We had to chase him down and Sour Cream was inconsolable, sure that Buddy wasn't coming back. I was able to coax Buddy out of hiding by invoking my brother's name and saying "Let's go see [him]." This is a great dog, but he misses the hell out of Daddy.

  2. My sister nannied for us one summer when the kids were 2.5 and 6 months. She loved it and is glad she did it. Only downside is that my kids were so young they don't remember it.

  3. First round of the NCAA tournament: "People think this tourney hasn't been very exciting because it's lacked drama and upsets. What should we do?"

    Second round: "Hold my drink."

  4. Went back to Winding Trails in Farmington for more skate-skiing what with the fresh load of snow we got last Tuesday. Great skiing conditions and I beat my best time on the 3 mile loop by about 10 minutes.

On the way out, I stopped by the lake and watched the waterfowl with my Steiner Military/Marine binoculars - funny it's hard to hold binoculars steady after skate-skiing. Hundreds of ducks including the hooded mergansers from before, but also a bunch of common mergansers and some smaller black ducks I couldn't ID. They seem fine to hang out with Canada geese and gulls.

      1. A good guess - they were smaller also.

I also saw a bird with a distinctive white 'comma' marking, then after some research concluded it was another hoodie.

  5. This seems to be the last nice weather weekend in NOLA until next November, so we're boiling crawfish in the back yard.

    1. I know that it's a thing to weird out about eating crawfish (when I was a kid I wouldn't have eaten any of the things I ate for dinner tonight because picky), but this is possibly my favorite meal of all time. If I'm sent to the chair I'd hope they'd let me have a boil as my last meal.

  6. On The Grill - Swordfish Skewers and Corn

Cut the swordfish steaks into 3/4-1" cubes (cut off any reddish, stringy parts). Marinate in soy sauce, ginger, rosemary, olive oil, lemon juice, sea salt and crushed pepper while the briquets lite up in your briquet chimney.

Soak some wooden sticks in water. After cleaning the corn, cut it into 3 pieces, and toss in a large bowl with olive oil, rosemary, and sea salt.
When the grill is ready, skewer the swordfish and cook the skewers and corn pieces over high heat - turning every so often so they don't burn.

    1. Oooh.

the Girl just made fried bananas (batter-fried) as an appetizer/snack. Mmm. We're having chick pea curry (package from Costco) over lemon rice (jasmine rice with lemon, cardamom and turmeric).

    1. A year after 8 wins so "Just happy to be here" is fine with me. Middle Tennessee State had more top 25 votes than MN so I wouldn't call it a bad loss.

    2. Yeah, although it's hard to come up with any real conclusions about the quality of teams based on the results of a single-elimination tournament. It makes great drama, though, which is what makes it great.
