        1. I've heard him say "He left that pitch up" on a pitch that was at the ankles. I think it's just something he says to give himself time to think of something to say.

Dick and Bert used to be better than they are now. I think that, at some point, they figured out that they don't have to work very hard or do very much to keep their jobs. So they do the bare minimum necessary, and it seems to be working for them.

  1. Hockey politics heating up over women's world championships. USA Hockey exec and Rochester's own Jim Johannson gets a mention.

Jim Johannson, U.S.A. Hockey’s assistant executive director of hockey operations, said Monday he had “nothing to say” on the matter.

  2. On this day in 1905, Marlin Perkins, former director at the Saint Louis Zoo, was born in Carthage, Missouri. He became a regular feature in many American living rooms when his television show, “Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom,” premiered in 1963. Marlin got his start at the Zoo in 1921 as a member of the grounds crew. He retired as director in 1970, but he remained active in community and conservation projects up to the time of his death on June 14, 1986. Since 1991, the Marlin Perkins Society has existed as a way to recognize those individuals, corporations and foundations who generously support the Zoo and carry on Marlin’s dream for conserving endangered species and nurturing their existence.

        1. Aye. Along with Lawrence Welk and whatever sci fi series happened to be running in prime time (e.g., UFO, Space 1999, Buck Rogers, or Battlestar Gallactica).

  3. There is tanning place here in the Omaha area called Three Mile Island Tanning. I always considered that in very poor taste. On the other hand, most of the people making use of said establishment probably have no idea as to what the name is referencing.

  4. Meat bait:

Sign being held outside MPR hq by someone apparently unhappy with the government's proposed budgetary cuts:

"Donald, what the &$@# did Dr. Dog do to you?"

      1. Serves 4-5
1 inch of ginger, finely chopped
        3-4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
        ~1 tablespoon green curry paste
1-2 tablespoons brown sugar or palm sugar (if you have it)
1/2 a large or one small onion, roughly chopped into large, bite-sized pieces
1 medium sweet potato, peeled and cut into bite-sized chunks.
a can of coconut milk (not that lite crap)
fish sauce (start with a teaspoon or so; I like more) or soy sauce (if you have a vegan in the house)
1/2 cup or more as needed of vegetable stock (or chicken stock or water)
        juice of a lime
        a can of bamboo shoots
1/2 a red pepper (or more, to taste), seeded and chunked
        1 jalapeno, seeded and chunked
1 lb or so of asparagus, steamed, shocked, and cut into bite-sized pieces (I reserved the asparagus-flavored water for making rice)
        2-3 cups of spinach, rough-chopped
a bunch or so of basil leaves (at least a dozen or so, more to taste)
pinch of crushed red pepper flakes and a half teaspoon or so of white pepper (for a very mild curry; for more heat, you could substitute several chopped serranos or thai bird chiles for the jalapeno or up the pepper flakes)
for garnish: chopped cilantro, roasted, salted peanuts, and lime wedges.

heat up a big, wide pot (I use my cast iron dutch oven). Add a tablespoon or so of oil and the chopped garlic and ginger. Stir a few times, then add the curry paste. Fry for a minute or so, then add the onions and brown sugar and pepper flakes/white pepper. Fry for a minute or so, then add the sweet potatoes. Stir in the coconut milk and half of the broth and the fish sauce or soy and the juice of a lime. Bring to boil and cover for about 5-7 minutes to cook the potato most of the way through. Uncover and add the bamboo shoots and peppers. Recover and cook another 2-3 minutes or until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the asparagus and the spinach. Cover and cook for about a minute to wilt the spinach. Stir in the basil. Serve with rice (I use long grain rice, usually jasmine, for curries). Add more stock or water if the curry is too thick for your liking.

Would also be good with shrimp or chicken.

    1. Sounds awesome. If you don't use all the green curry save some for chilaquiles.

      1. Now, there is something I never would have thought of.

I love chilaquiles, but with green curry? Hmmm!

      1. These newspaper brackets, and "best of ___________" are all a racket to push people to their website. I never indulge.

          1. Yeah, I guess they are in the money making business. But it really is a "who can stuff the ballot box the best" contest. A former employer of mine used to send out to all of their locations an email basically telling us to stuff the ballot box in whatever city was running a "best of" contest. Then on top of that, the newspaper would want us to place an ad in an edition begging for votes, and another ad in the edition that announced the results. Would love to see the "best of" contests be more of a blind poll of local residents.

            1. I didn't vote, but I would have voted for Schell's at every point along the way.
Not because I'm a homer, but because I actually like their offerings more than anyone else (not that I've had beer from everyone in the bracket, but they get extra weight from having done it for so long).
Just got a sixer of Maifest on Monday. Might be my favorite... hops and malt.
