2017 Game 5: twins @ white sox

I know this might not be a popular opinion around here, but I'm willing to be a contrarian. This season has started better than 2016 did.

I know that the Royals are probably not all that good (that bullpen! yuck), and the White Sox aren't exactly the 1927 Yankees, but none of that really matters. Some of the teams that clobbered the Twins in that abysmal start last year weren't any good, either. A win against a bad team is still more enjoyable to watch than any kind of loss.

Adalberto Mejia gets the start for the Twins today. He was the haul that we picked up in the Eduardo Nunez trade. If he turns out to be anything at all, that will be an excellent trade. I'm intrigued by him, at any rate.

Let's go Twins!

  1. Pitch framing be damned, Castro (and Giminez) have called some pretty good games so far. And now I'm hoping Mejia is going to pitch like he showed in spring training

  2. Can't say I wasn't a little nervous when mauer denied to slide at first there.

    1. CHW on the air (and MLB) on WLS. I used to listen to this AM broadcasting wonder at night to catch all the latest/greatest hits. Then I heard they went to talk radio.

        1. John Records Landecker, Larry Lujack. Just talking with NBBW (who also listened to WLS from Albert Lea) : The Night Chicago Died, Run Joey Run, Convoy, Disco Duck, The Boys are Back in Town, Blinded by the Light, Float Like a Butterfly-Sting Like a Bee, I Am Woman .

    1. Me too. My work for today is to sit on my deck watching the twins game and drinking beer.

    1. I could only half-listen (I was running public address at a track meet), but it seemed to me the Mejia got an awfully quick hook. Not that he was pitching well, but let's not let the first week of the season fool us. 161-1 notwithstanding, this season needs to be about player development a lot more than wins and losses, and the only way players will develop is if you let them work through their struggles. I'm sure it's tempting, as a manager, to want to go all out to win each game, but sometimes that's not in the best interests of the team in the long term.

      1. Perhaps Molly was worried about injury. He already had, what, 40 pitches that inning? Radio guys said he was laboring and frustrated.

      2. He looked really bad yesterday. He had some iffy control, but he's biggest issue, and the one that I think makes it a good call to get him out of there, was that he absolutely could not miss a bat which led to a lot of looooong at bats.

  3. First really nice day here in H'istan for grilling. Fired up the Aussie several times earlier this year (usually in defiance of weather), but a real treat today.

Chilean Sea-bass, roasted corn-on-the-cob, red bell peppers and onions.

  4. Twins out-hitting White Sox 7-3. Out-erroring White Sox 2-0, however. It sure helps to have a long reliever the opposite handedness of the starter.

Top of the order will be up in the 7th.

    1. Yeah, but at the same time, he wasn't exactly fooling a lot of batters. He had the liner right back to him, the diving catch by Polanco and 2 line drives to Buxton to go along with the fantastic double play started by Dozier.

      1. All I'm saying is, nobody likes hitting the showers after giving up four runs on back to back homers.

  5. FlashBack in Time

Dazzle: Who should have caught that ball?
    Pohlad: Someone.

  6. I think Castro has thrown out more base runners in games than Suzuki did all last year.

  7. Down four runs, Grossman pinch hits for Rosario to lead off the top of the ninth, forcing a better matchup against a lefty. Naturally, Grossman shows bunt on the first pitch.

    1. What's the problem? He's obviously trying to bunt for a hit. In the ninth inning the only important thing is getting on base. If they're playing back, and I imagine with Grossman, they probably were, it's not a bad idea. If he were the tying or go-ahead run, I'd probably think differently when an extra-base hit would make a difference, but it's not like a sac bunt attempt when you're trying to give away an out.

  8. I had the sound down and wasn't watching all that closely, but I'm surprised there was a double play to end the game. Were the White Sox still holding Escobar on at first? If not, did Dozier hit the first pitch (or every pitch) thrown to him? Did Escobar take off for second and they turned the double play anyways? I just figured the Sox wouldn't hold Escobar on and he should have taken second easily to stay out of the double play.

  9. Well, no major league team has gone unbeaten, and I guess the Twins won't be the first. It's clear that moving Buxton out of the third spot in the order robbed the team of its mojo. I guess we'll just have to settle for 161-1!
