    1. Though even he probably never assaulted anyone on a plane*.

      * - There's an infamous story about a different pro wrestler urinating on a stewardess, though. He's now a recovered alcoholic.

      1. He knows about unjustifiably being in a position he'd rather not be in.

But the cream rises to the top.

      1. That's what I do. For people who want evaluations in multiple dimensions of more methods than anyone else could possibly know, there's a site for that. He also, obviously, discusses methods to lace the shoes as well.

        1. Ahh, I needed that site in my life decades ago!

TBH, I've been using a "lacing strategy" for years now ("lock lacing" or "runner's tie"), since I learned it at my local fancy-running-shoes store, to deal with heel slip.

    1. It is not fashionable, but since I was young, I just tuck the loops into my laces. Never had it fail in 6+ years of running cross country and track and a lot more than that in day-to-day life. Since I have pretty skinny feet, I always seemed to have huge loops leftover anyway, so I needed to do something with the extra length and that seemed like the obvious thing to do. My wife makes fun of me for it, but it works, so the joke is really on her.

    1. You might want to write the number of the local ACLU office on your arm in Sharpie.

      1. Yeah, I still don't buy it. There were plenty of ways (or at lea$t one $izeable one) to get a final volunteer without resorting to force.

I also hate adhesion contracts, particularly as they tend to be a sign that there isn't a true competitive market. So anyone standing behind "it was in the contract of carriage" is missing the larger point.

        1. Most of it? hell, I got less than half way and had to start skimming. Dumb points and worse writing is a bad way to make a case.

          1. I stopped reading right around the point where she implied the binary decision between being okay with occasional incidents like this and allowing the next 9/11.

      2. Oh man, I hate these lines of argument.

I’m not arguing that what happened wasn’t completely terrible–it was, on multiple levels.

Then why are you bothering to write a bunch of excuses for United in what follows? None of her arguments address the real problem.

“You can’t just kick a paying customer off the plane!”

Right, airlines do this all the time without assaulting anyone.

“Kicking a paying customer off an airplane!? I’m taking my business to Southwest!”

Right, all the airlines will kick people off planes, but they don't assault people to do it.

“So what’s this ‘must ride’ nonsense anyway? They shouldn’t bump a paying customer for a free employee ride!”

"Must ride" is not equivalent to "must drag through the aisle."

“It’s the airline’s fault for not planning better!”

Yeah, and the other airlines that require last-minute accommodations haven't needed to drag someone through the aisle to keep everything moving on time.

They shouldn’t have picked the minority Chinese doctor! It’s racist.”

I could quibble about the institutional racism in choosing to bump economy over first class, or that police interactions with minorities happens to be a hotly contested issue at the moment, but this really has nothing to do with why they decided they needed to assault one of their passengers.

“United should go under for assaulting that passenger! Fire the entire crew!”

Strawman. I haven't seen anyone reasonable say that United should go under (we'd just have fewer options than we have already) or that the crew should be fired. That doesn't mean they handled the situation well.

        “You piece of **it!”

I see, it's all the media's fault. This is just a commonplace occurrence, nothing to really be bothered about. There are reasons. It's complicated. Just accept your punishment and go to your room.

I accept that sometimes passengers need to be taken off the plane even after they've boarded (though overselling flights is more than ridiculous when airlines are allowed to sell nonrefundable fares and refundable fares costs as much as double a refundable fare), but they didn't need to resort to violence in this situation. They could have bumped the next person and told this guy he was never flying United again. Or had him arrested in Louisville if they are asserting that he committed a crime.

And even then, they could have said initially that this was something they never want any of their passengers to go through and they are reviewing all their policies to ensure it doesn't happen again. But they acted like it was just business as usual. Of course people are going to be mad if you look at the video of someone dragged through the aisle of a plane and act like it's just another day at the office. Would you want to go back to a restaurant if the management decided to drag someone out of the restaurant while you're sitting there eating, otherwise minding your business? And of course a restaurant would never do this, it would be terrible for business and people have choices where to eat. But in many cases, we don't have real choices in how we fly, so they know they can do basically whatever they want.

        1. And all of those dumb points are even worse with the "follow all the rules, know your place. Gawd, why can't people just do what their told?' nonsense leading into them.

Seriously, we, as a society, need to abandon this "gotta hear both sides" horse shit.

          1. On a related, more light-hearted take on the topic of reservations, this is so spot on..

"See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to hold the reservation."

        2. Right, airlines do this all the time without assaulting anyone.

Including United. They didn't assault the guy, the security personnel did. It would be like a business calling the police to remove someone from their premises, the police beating up the guy and the business getting the blame for it.

          1. Yeah, all they did is call in the goon squad and condone their actions after the fact.

          2. To remove someone they willing let into their store, was legally allowed to be where he was, and could not be removed according to the contract he had agreed to with the store.

        1. I like this one a lot better. It actually uses critical thinking to look at the problem.

  1. bS (and others), in case you have any leftover hummus, here's something to do with it. I was looking for an easy way to use up some extra already-cooked rice and happened to have hummus on hand as well. I went with ground Aleppo pepper and cooked the fritters in a cast iron pan rather than nonstick. I used plain yogurt as a dipping sauce, but something like the lemon-tahini yogurt here would be even better.

    1. What is "leftover hummus"?

      🙂

Will take a look. I have a great recipe for falafel (from the same site as the hummus recipe), but it uses soaked-not-cooked chick peas. I have several cups of leftover, cooked chick peas. Planning more hummus and possible a curry.

      1. There's lots of room to play around--you could season it differently, add some fresh herbs, possibly ditch the hummus and use leftover (already seasoned) beans, etc. Also, the fact that everything goes into the food processor makes it nicely cohesive so you're not leaving half the fritter in the frying pan.

    1. There were about four chances there that weren't just good scoring opportunities missed, they were a freakish combination of excellent goaltending and insanely bad luck.

  2. I hope Coyle's broken stick won't go down in infamy in Wild history. Unbelievable. A broken stick on a sure OT goal and then they lose when their opponent loses the puck trying to make a move only to have it slide right to a guy in the slot. That's insanely bad luck. More often than not, when a player loses a puck like that in front of the net, it turns into an odd-man rush the other way if not a breakaway. That sucks. Oh well, if the Wild keep playing like that, I sure think they will win this series.
