April 21, 2017: So, North Carolina

The surprises in the most consequential month of my life continue, as I hear more and more about casting (I can't talk about any of it yet, but it's too much to wrap my head around) and I get more info about my role on the show as well as the pay I'll get, which may get me out of this day job sooner than later.

We shoot from July to September, apparently in North Carolina. So, I guess I'll be going there for the first time.

  1. Congrats! That means you'll still be in town for Wrestlepalooza X, which just announced the return of Joey Ryan.

  2. Not mentioned last night, because apparently apathy has set in, if the Wild lose today at least they aren't the Blackhawks.

    1. If the Wild lose today that will be worse than the Blackhawks.

Because they don't play until tomorrow.

      1. Crap, I read the top scroll at nhl.com wrong. Didn't see the April 22nd part.

Either way, I almost wish I still worked in Rockford.

  3. Congrats Spooky. I'm, uh... actually going to be in North Carolina for a stretch this summer. Let's meet up.

    1. I like the micro-regions like Twin Falls ID, Jackson WY, Sheridan WY, West Plains MO, and (eastern, Appalachian) KY.

Laurentide feels congruent with my experience of Minnesota "culture": extending further into NoDak and Western Wisconsin than into Iowa or SoDak.

Here's the direct site (bypassing the Strib), with an interactive map.
Here's a Census2050 map of different "megaregions". Even there, MSP is separated from the rest of "Great Lakes"

        This feels .... duplicative.

    2. I'm not reading all the research but I find it curious that Fargo is included with the Twin Cities with essentially the same number of commuters as Phx area.

  4. Well, this is no fun. I'm going to start rumors now...

Spoons is going to work with Christina Hendricks! TMBG is doing the soundtrack?! How cool is that!

    1. Ron Howard was executive producer but pulled out of the project after Spooky insisted on casting Spooky's talentless brother.

      1. After Rob Howard bowed out now Ben Affleck is sniffing around. Wants to re-set the movie in Boston starring Mark Walberg and Selena Gomez

        1. I've heard they changed the entire premise, and inserted cute little nods to insider-Hollywood & Hollywood culture.

            1. Shit's really going down now. Kate MckKinnen just bought the rights to the sequel promising to do an all female cast version (with a Sandra Bullick uncredited cameo, natch). Fanboys going apeshit on Reddit. Planning to shut shooting in N.C. so that there can't be an original, thus no lady sequel.

      2. This whole thread was a joy.

Algonad was closest to the truth, I guess: today, my brother Nick goes "That's cool. Hey, if the budget has the room to fly in a guy with absolutely no talent, I'm available."

    1. that was a nice read. And actually accurate!

I do give him crap sometimes because he now likes to style (heh) himself as being from NYC rather than Foley....

      1. He probably lived in NYC longer than he lived in Foley, right? He gets a pass. I'd also award him a gold star for getting out of NYC before it gentrifies itself into irrelevance. (It's fast approaching.)

Thank for the link. I've had a copy of his Vanderbilt bio on my nightstand since last fall. Need to read that.

        1. if he were leaving NYC for New Orleans then he'd have his star revoked at the parish line.

        2. He probably lived in NYC longer than he lived in Foley, right?

I don't think so. But close, I guess.

I just like pulling his chain, telling him he thinks he so fancy, puttin' on airs and stuff. Usually when he's sitting around in a tee-shirt and cargo shorts.

          1. That goes without saying.

But his brother did right and went into the family business, correct?

            1. I admit that I was not aware he had a brother. I know of two sisters. Don't remember meeting a brother at his wedding....

              1. hunting around, yes, I guess his brother Kevin IS the pride of the family. TJ must have been embarrassed by his brother's notoriety. I don't recall him ever mentioning a brother. Then again, I don't recall ever mentioning MY brother to him, either.

I knew one of his sisters a little, as she also attended the Alma Mater.

                1. I'm sure I've shared it here before, but I love the fact that, after I hit myself in the head with a hammer, his dad came in on a weekend to stitch me up.

                  1. I did not know that. The latter part. I mean, the former part, well, we ALL expected you'd done that a few times.

                    1. also, since he was the county coroner, I guess he kind of had a vertically integrated business model. Being present for your death would have simplified the paperwork.

  5. I was fartin around looking to see what's on and WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME INTO THE BADLANDS WAS BACK!?

This fills me with great joy.

  6. However, some good news from Phil Miller:

Twins & DBacks are only MLB teams w/ no roster moves since Opening Day. May change soon: Molitor said they're discussing 12-man pitch staff.

  7. TRIVIA TIME: Without using the Googles--name the only basketball player who led the NCAA, ABA and NBA in scoring.

    1. George McGinniss?

      Probably not the NB A.

Dr. J is a possible. Rick Barry is a possible. Billy Cunningham is a possible.

      I will go with Barry.

      1. You are correct. I was stumped. I incorrectly guessed McGuiniss, David Thompson, and finally Dan Issel.

        1. Issel was a very good guess. As a senior, he averaged 33.9 ppg at Kentucky, which is almost as many as I would have guessed that the TEAM scored per game. But he had the misfortune of being in college at the same time as Pete Maravich.

I didn't even think of Thompson. He averaged 35.6 ppg as a freshman in 1971-72, but in only 16 games. Bo Lamar led the nation at 36.3. As a senior, Thompson averaged 29.9, but Bob McCurdy (? Who?) led the country at 32.9 ppg.
Amazingly, Thompson never led the NBA in scoring either (he had only one season in the ABA before the merger, averaging merely 26.0, second in the league; the leader was Dr. J at 29.1). And he famously finished second to George Gervin in 1977-78. Thompson scored 73 in the last game of the season (shooting 28-38 from the field and 17-20 from the line in a 139-137 loss to Detroit). But Gervin scored 63 that night (in a 20-point loss) to stay in the scoring lead (27.22 ppg to 27.15 ppg). I very distinctly remember those reports.

McGinnis averaged over 30 ppg in his one season at IU, but Johnny Neumann led the country at 40.1 ppg that year.
