Minor Details: Games of May 17

The Red Wings blow the lead, as ex-Twins lead a comeback.  The Lookouts blow a lead, as home runs do them in.  Lachlan Wells throws a rare nine-inning complete game for the Miracle.  Lots of offense for the Kernels.

LEHIGH VALLEY 11, ROCHESTER 8 IN ROCHESTER (11 INNINGS)

The Red Wings had leads of 4-1 and 8-4, but could not hold them.  Rhys Hoskins homered in the eighth to tie it 8-8.  In the eleventh, two one-out singles put men on first and second, a single-plus-error by J. P. Crawford scored both of them, and Crawford scored on a ground out.  The Red Wings had gotten the go-ahead run to third in both the eighth and the tenth but did not score.  Ex-Twin Pedro Florimon was 5-for-5 with a double and three runs, raising his average from .263 to .349.  Ex-Twin Casey Fien pitched 1.2 scoreless innings and has an ERA of zero in 2.1 innings for the IronPigs.

David Hurlbut has pitched very well this year but not this day, going only 3.2 innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts.  Alan Busenitz pitched 3.1 scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts, dropping his ERA to 2.25.  He has 21 strikeouts in 16 innings.  ByungHo Park had his first good game since coming off the disabled list, going 3-for-4 with a double.  J. B. Shuck was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.  John Ryan Murphy was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, his third.  Matt Hague and Daniel Palka were each 2-for-5 with a double.  Zack Granite was 1-for-5 with a walk and is batting .310.  Engelb Vielma was 0-for-5 to drop his average to .091.

BIRMINGHAM 8, CHATTANOOGA 6 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts led 6-2, but a six-run seventh gave the game to the Barons.  Felix Jorge pitched well for six innings, but with one out in the seventh gave up a walk, a single, and another walk to load the bases.  Mason Melotakis came in and gave up a grand slam to Hunter Jones to tie the game.  With two out in the inning, Jake Peter hit a two-run homer to give Birmingham the lead.  Chattanooga did not get a hit after scoring four runs in the fourth inning.

For the game, Jorge pitched 6.1 innings and was charged with five runs on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts.  John Curtiss pitched a scoreless inning to keep his ERA at zero through 14.2 innings.  He has 19 strikeouts.  T. J. White led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, and is batting .364.  Nick Gordon was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk and is batting .320.  Edgar Corcino was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .307.  LaMonte Wade was 0-for-4 and is batting .316.  Levi Michael hit a home run.

FORT MYERS 3, CLEARWATER 1 IN FORT MYERS

Daniel Kihle hit a three-run homer in the second to give the Miracle a 3-1 lead and the scoring ended there.  The Threshers got a man to third in the third but never again.  They had only four hits in the game.

Lachlan Wells pitched a nine-inning complete game, a rarity at any minor league level, much less Class A.  He gave up one run on four hits and two walks with four strikeouts and used just ninety pitches.  Chris Paul was 2-for-4 and is batting .331.  Tanner English was 1-for-3 with a walk to keep his average at .333.  Kihle's home run was his third.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, PEORIA 4 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The Kernels scored five in the second to take a 7-3 lead and controlled the game the rest of the way.  Jermaine Palacios hit a three-run homer and Mitchell Kranson hit a solo homer in the inning.  The Chiefs scored on in the seventh and had the bases loaded with two out, but a strikeout ended the threat.

Sean Poppen pitched six innings and gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.38.  Alex Robinson struck out four in two shutout innings.  Kranson was 3-for-4 with a double in addition to his third homer.  Palacios was 3-for-4 with a double in addition to his fourth homer and is batting .336.  Brandon Lopez was 3-for-4 with a double.  Aaron Whitefield was 3-for-5.  Ben Rortvedt was 2-for-4.  Lewin Diaz hit a home run, his fifth.
