Minor Details: Games of July 6

A fine game for Tim Melville.  Not enough offense for Chattanooga.  Jaylin Davis hits his first high-A homer.  The Kernels hit four home runs, but a single wins the game.   Ariel Montesino and Shane Carrier lead to a sweep for the E-Twins.  Nick Tepesch continues his rehab in the GCL.  A big-inning wins it for the DSL Twins.

PAWTUCKET 1, ROCHESTER 0 IN ROCHESTER

There was no score until the seventh, when Steve Selsky hit a ground-rule double and scored on an error.  The Red Wings had four hits, all singles, and did not get a man past first base.

Tim Melville pitched his best game of the season, going eight innings and giving up an unearned run on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.51.  Drew Rucinski struck out two in a scoreless inning, making his ERA 1.54 with a WHIP of 0.77.  Matt Hague was 2-for-4.  Zack Granite was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .360.  Ryan Strausborger was 0-for-3 and is now hitless in eight at-bats for Rochester.

TENNESSEE 2, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA

All the runs came in the fourth inning.  Jason Vosler homered with one out to put the Smokies ahead 1-0.  Yasiel Balaguert followed with a double and scored on a Trey Martin single to make it 2-0.  In the bottom of the inning, LaMonte Wade had a one-out double and scored on a Jonathan Rodriguez single.  And that was it.  The Lookouts threatened in the ninth, putting men on second and third with none out, but the next three batters struck out to end the game.

Fernando Romero struck out seven in five innings, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk.  He threw 86 pitches.  His ERA is 2.94 with 86 strikeouts in 85.2 innings.  Ryan Eades struck out four in three shutout innings.  Raul Fernandez pitched a scoreless inning.  Wade was 2-for-3 with a double.  Nick Gordon was 0-for-4 and is batting .302.

FORT MYERS 8, TAMPA 3 IN TAMPA

Jaylin Davis hit a two-run homer in a four-run fourth that put the Miracle ahead 5-0.  Trey Amburgey's two-run homer in the sixth cut the lead to 5-3, but Fort Myers scored three in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  Sean Miller had a two-run single in the eighth inning.

Lewis Thorpe struck out six in 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and four walks to make his ERA 2.23.  He has 37 strikeouts in 32.1 innings.  Andrew Vasquez struck out four in 2.1 scoreless innings to keep his ERA at zero with a WHIP of 0.73 and 24 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.  Tom Hackimer pitched a perfect inning to make his ERA 1.29.  Zander Weil was 4-for-5 with two doubles.  Miller was 3-for-5 with three RBIs.  Tanner English was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Jermaine Palacios was 1-for-5 and is batting .340.

CEDAR RAPIDS 7, WISCONSIN 6 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

It was 3-3 after two and 4-4 after three.  Tucker Neuhaus homered in the fifth and Ronnie Gideon had an RBI single in the eighth to put the Timber Rattlers up 6-4.  In the bottom of the eighth, Christian Cavaness had an RBI single and Aaron Whitefield delivered a two-run single to give the Kernels a 7-6 advantage.  Wisconsin went down in order in the ninth.

Domenick Carlini pitched five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts.  Colton Davis struck out four in two perfect innings to make his ERA 2.01 with a WHIP of 0.99 and 40 strikeouts in 40.1 innings.  Cedar Rapids hit four home runs.  Cavaness was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Lewin Diaz was 2-for-4 with a home run, his tenth.  Hank Morrison was 2-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  Andre Jernigan hit the other home run.  Joe Cronin was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

ELIZABETHTON 8, PRINCETON 5 IN ELIZABETHTON (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

The Twins had leads of 3-0, 4-1, and 5-3.  They finally put the game out of reach with Ariel Montesino hit a three-run homer in the sixth.  The Rays scored two in the seventh but did not get the tying run up to bat.

Moises Gomez pitched 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  Carson Crites was 3-for-4 with a home run and is batting .357.  Montesino was 2-for-3 with two home runs and a walk, scoring three times and driving in four.  Brent Rooker was 2-for-3 with a home run, his fourth.  Jordan Gore was 1-for-3 to drop his average to .500.  Mark Contreras was 1-for-3 and is batting .357.

ELIZABETHTON 9, PRINCETON 8 IN ELIZABETHTON

The Rays scored four runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.  The Twins bounced back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 8-5.  Shane Carrier hit a three-run homer in the inning.  Trey Hair hit a two-run double in the sixth and Andrew Miller homered in the seventh to tie the score 8-8.  Carrier led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, took third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to win the game.

Melvi Acosta struck out five in five innings but allowed five runs (three earned) on seven hits and two walks.  Wander Javier was 3-for-4 and is batting .303.  Carrier was 2-for-4 with a home run and a double, driving in three.  Jose Miranda was 2-for-4 and is batting .317.  Matt Albanese was 1-for-3 and is batting .366.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks and is batting .333.

GCL TWINS 3, GCL RAYS 2 AT TWINS

Carlos Vargas had a two-run double in the first, but Kerby Camacho singled home a run in the bottom of the first and Akil Baddoo tripled one home in the second to tie it 2-2.  The Twins put together three consecutive singles in the sixth, with Victor Tademo driving in a run to make it 3-2.  The Rays had men on second and third with one out in the eighth but their last eight batters were retired.

Nick Tepesch did better in his third rehab start, going five innings and giving up two runs on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts.  Pedro Garcia struck out three in four shutout innings to keep his ERA at zero with a WHIP of 0.88 in 10.2 innings.  Alex Robles was 2-for-3 and is batting .393.  Camacho was 2-for-4 and is batting .333.  Baddoo was 1-for-4 with a triple and is batting .316.  Dane Hutcheon was 0-for-2 with a walk and is batting .333.  Kidany Salva was 0-for-2 and is hitless in seven at-bats.

DSL TWINS 9, DSL ANGELS 5 AT TWINS

The Angels scored two in the top of the second to take a 2-1 lead, but the Twins scored seven in the bottom of the second to put the game out of reach.  Francisco Martinez had a two-run single and Mariano Calcano had a two-run homer in the inning.  The Angels never got closer than four runs after that.

Jesus Toledo pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts to make his ERA 1.09.  Fernando Sanchez pitched a scoreless inning.  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 4-for-5 with a home run and a triple and is batting .409.  Yeison Perez was 2-for-3 with a walk.  Juan Martinez was 2-for-4 and is batting .323.  Calcano was 1-for-4 with a home run, his second, and is batting .333.  Ruben Santana was 0-for-2 with two walks and is batting .339.  Yeremi De La Cruz was 0-for-2 in his season debut.
