Game 93: Yankees at Twins

We all have to admit this Twins season has been better than expected. Forty-seven wins on July 17, while the 2016 version hadn’t won #47 until August 13th, team somewhat in the play-off mix in a bad division, good years from Sano, Santana, Berrios, Kintzler… we all know the facts. The Twins have been playing decent, fun baseball. When they get blown out, heck throw the back-up catcher out there for an inning. It’s fun and baseball is a game, meaning it should be fun.

That’s why the Twins signing Bartolo Colón and having him pitch against the Yankees is such a compelling story. It’s fun, it’s interesting. It has a bit of “hey check out this crazy thing.” Will Aaron Judge hit a massive homerun off of Colón? Likely. Will Bartolo dazzle the Yankees for 6 innings with 3-hit ball? Unlikely. Is this just a marketing ploy to get a few more tickets sold at Target Field or a few more eyeballs checking out DicknBert? Could be. Who knows what will happen tonight but isn’t that the compelling part? That it will be fun to see? That tomorrow you will see a bunch of memes or funny tweets? That at least for a little bit we were engaged by baseball?

Yankees pitcher is some guy named Luis Cessa. Game time at 7:10p. The big sexy thunderstorms earlier forecasted during game time seem to have dissapated so it looks like game on.

  1. To reiterate from the CoC, if Colón gets through the fourth inning he'll have pitched deeper than the late Joe Niekro, now the second-oldest starter in franchise history.

      1. I know it's a joke, but it's unfair to Adalberto Mejia, who has pitched into the sixth in his last four starts and has lowered his ERA by 1.53 (5.75 to 4.22) in his last six starts.

      1. And that's all. Not that they weren't trying and all, but I suspect we'll come to regret that.

    1. I'd go so far as to say it's the quintessential Rosario at-bat. (although I'll gladly take a .790 OPS from him)

    2. I thought it was a pretty good at-bat for Rosario. Yeah, he struck out, but he didn't chase stuff. He'll normally crush a fastball that he swung and missed at. While it is disappointing to get just one run after having the bases loaded, it should also be encouraging that the Twins have a run without a hit.

      1. Well, yes and no. Yes, it's nice to be able to score one without a hit, but it would've been a lot nicer to get some hits and score several.

        1. It would also be nice to not strike out against a guy who can't buy a ticket for a pitch in the zone.

        2. Of course, it would be nice to get hits, but if the guy isn't going to throw strikes, it's kind of hard to get hits. The Twins had 7 batters and 4 of them reached base. That's a good inning. The only player that really had a bad at-bat would be Kepler, who got ahead in the count but popped up a high fastball. I think he had a good plan looking for a fastball up in the zone to drive to the outfield, but it was just too far up, so I think he chased ball four. Still, with runners in scoring position, the Twins reached base 2 times in 4 PAs. Unfortunately, only 1 created an RBI. The good news was a lot of pitches thrown and Dozier will get an at-bat in the second inning.

          1. If the guy isn't going to throw strikes, it should be kind of hard to strike out.

            1. 45% strike rate after the second inning. Almost equal chances at walking or striking out if you don't swing.

      2. faint praise. Kind of like praising a certain global power president for only offending 20% of the population with a tweet.

        1. Sorry if that is forbidden zone. I don't even know how to hide a comment as forbidden zone. Heck, that is half the reason I don't post as much around here. The fact that we can't post a comment about the craziness going on in this world right now makes me ill to the very depths of my stomach. Ok... I am fine now. Thanks for listening. Or reading. Whatever.

          1. Use the spoiler tags and just change the 'spoiler' to FZ.

I don't think you'll get too much push back on your comment, though, but i get what you're saying. I started posting a bit more often at canis hoopus for that purpose.

  2. awkward interview with Morneau. u can tell he wants to play, but no one will let him. Dick n Bert dont make it easy on him with their silly questions.

  3. Darn! That would've been such an awesome story if he'd thrown a no-hitter. He only missed by twenty-three outs, too.

  4. Thinking about what Mauer & Morneau might've accomplished without post-concussion syndrome makes me pretty sad.

    1. With two more seasons like 2013, Mauer would be a shoo-in for the Hall. I wonder if Morneau was about to elevate his game in 2010 or not. Instead, we get two more what-ifs.

  5. My wife doesn't get the "big sexy" nickname. I told her it just doesn't make sense to explain it.

  6. I wonder if Hughes really had a "recurrence" of his problem or if it never really was solved in the first place.

  7. So, I listen to Nanne as much as I can when he is on the Barrerio show. Morneau's cadence, accent, etc really reminds me of Nanne interviews. Eh?

  8. Hearing Byron Buxton's Sheboygan ad for the hundredth time got me thinking--what if a player made a deal with some company to use their advertising jingle as his walk-up music. Would the team and/or MLB allow it? And if not, on what grounds, other than that they weren't getting a cut?

        1. Your gonna love curling then. I think 75% of the club can't help but affect a Canadian sound while on the ice.

          1. I once was involved with a Canadian lady. That was quite formative. Probably good the faux accents would be coming from bearded dudes.

  9. Colón gets through the fourth. He's making franchise history with every batter now.

  10. I think more balls have been hit off the top of that advertisement sign this year than all the other years combined.

  11. Pretty neat trivia. Fifty-five years ago today Killebrew & Allison became the first teammates in MLB history to hit grand salamis in the same inning.

    1. It goes with their uni numbers, which are straight out of some Eighties baseball B-movie.

  12. It's looking like Colon may be turning back into a pumpkin. Not that it's such a transformation.

  13. On the one hand, Colon did better than I expected him to do. On the other hand, I had very low expectations.

    1. The Twins could've paid Mike Pelfrey tens of thousands more for this start.

    1. He's a really good example of why you don't just look at K rate. He has the best stuff on the roster, but he also makes way too many mistake pitches. He'd probably be better off with more walks if it meant keeping it out of the middle of the zone more often.

  14. Well this game isn't as fun anymore and I need some sleep. Be nice tomorrow morning to see they came back...

  15. Bring it home, fellers. I'm out. (Wrapping up Season 1 of The Americans. Need to plow through them while they're on Amazon Prime.)

When's the last time there was 130+ comments on a game log?

        1. Broaden the question: I wonder how many citizens we had in 2011 that we don't in 2017?

          1. Unfortunately, way more than citizens we have in 2017 that we didn't have in 2011.

              1. It took me a minute, but I follow his response:

Can: Who was here in 2011 that isn't now? Implication: We have X fewer Citizens.
Sean: And if we ask who is here now that wasn't in 2011? Implication: The number of Citizens we've gained is < X.

        2. I would say that's part of it. I definitely don't get to sit down and watch a game like we used to, though we've been having the games on the radio while he plays with toys, and that's worked out pretty nicely.

I would also say that with a the exception of a game here and there and a year or two, the games from 2011 to 2016 have not really merited 200 distinct things said about them.

          1. Yeah. From 2006-2010, I had endless free time and watched 150+ games per year. Now, I watch maybe one per week, and not from start to end.

            1. Yep, that was what I was thinking when I posted that. "Hey hon, you'll be watching the kid(s) while I watch the Twins game and comment on it with a bunch a dudes on my computer right?"

  16. Notable Twins older than Colón:

    Guy Diff
Pat Mahomes 2 years 288 days
Eddie Guardado 2 years 234 days
Tony Fiore 1 year 224 days
Matt Lawton 1 year 175 days
Rich Becker 1 year 112 days
Rich Garcés 1 year 6 days
    BRadke 209 days
    Frankie Rodriguez 164 days
    Johan -5 years 243 days
  17. Yankees with the big trade. If the new guys are there in time tomorrow, the Twins definitely need to have the lead before the bullpen gets in there.
