Minor Details: Games of July 27

Big days for Kennys Vargas and Dillon Gee.  Not enough offense for Chattanooga.  No luck for Sean Poppen.  The E-Twins waste their chances.  Glen Perkins continues his rehab.  A sweep for the DSL Twins.

ROCHESTER 7, INDIANAPOLIS 1 IN INDIANAPOLIS

Mitch Garver homered in the first and Niko Goodrum homered in the second as the Red Wings took a 3-1 lead.  A Kennys Vargas home run in the sixth made it 4-1 and a Vargas three-run homer in the eighth put the game out of reach.

Dillon Gee struck out seven in six innings, giving up one run on six hits and no walks.  His ERA is 2.00.  Jake Reed pitched two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 1.87 with a WHIP of 0.95.  John Curtiss struck out two in a scoreless inning to lower his ERA to 2.92 with a WHIP of 0.73 and 20 strikeouts in 12.1 innings.  J. B. Shuck was 3-for-5 with a double.  Vargas was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his sixth and seventh), four RBIs, and a walk.  Matt Hague was 2-for-5 with two doubles and is batting .300.  Garver's home run was his fifteenth and Goodrum's homer was his ninth.

BIRMINGHAM 3, CHATTANOOGA 1 IN CHATTANOOGA

Jonathan Rodriguez had an RBI single in the first, but the Barons tied it in the second.  It stayed 1-1 until the fifth, when a passed ball allowed Birmingham to take the lead.  The Barons added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly.  The Lookouts had loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

Kohl Stewart pitched five innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks with two strikeouts.  Raul Fernandez struck out two in two shutout innings.  Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk and is batting .317.  Levi Michael was 2-for-3.  Carlos Paulino was 1-for-4 and is batting .319.

LAKELAND 5, FORT MYERS 2 IN LAKELAND

Zander Weil doubled home a run in the top of the fourth, but the Flying Tigers responded with five in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game.  There were no walks, no errors, and no extra-base hits in the inning--the runs scored on seven singles.  None of the balls was hit exceptionally hard--it was simply one of those innings where everything they hit found a hole.  The Miracle did not score again until the ninth and did not get the tying run up to bat.

Sean Poppen pitched better than it sounds, but his line reads five innings, five runs, eleven hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.  Keaton Steele pitched three shutout innings of relief.  Fort Myers had just three hits.  Jermaine Palacios was 0-for-4 and is batting .304.

CEDAR RAPIDS AT PEORIA

Rained out.

PULASKI 1, ELIZABETHTON 0 IN PULASKI

Steven Sensley homered with one out in the fourth for the game's only run.  The Twins had plenty of chances to score but stranded eleven men and went 0-for-10 with men in scoring position.

Nick Brown had his best game of the season in a losing effort, going six innings and giving up one run on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts.  Charlie Barnes pitched two perfect innings to make his ERA 1.19 with 23 strikeouts in 22.2 innings.  Shane Carrier was 21-for-3 with a double and is batting .330.  Rainis Silva was 1-for-3 and is batting .326.  Jose Miranda was 0-for-4 and is batting .324.  T. J. Dixon was 1-for-4 and is batting .316.

GCL ORIOLES 12, GCL TWINS 1 AT TWINS

It was a good game for a while.  It was 1-1 after six, but the Orioles scored five in the seventh, four in the eighth, and two in the ninth.  Max Hogan hit a two-run double in the seventh, Willy Yahn had a two-run single in the eighth, and Jacob Brown hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

Glen Perkins pitched a scoreless inning, giving up a hit and a walk with one strikeout.  His ERA is at zero with three strikeouts in two innings.  Emmanuel Morel was 3-for-4 with two doubles, collecting three-fourths of the Twins hits.

DSL TWINS 2, DSL METS1 1 AT METS1 (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Jean Carlos Soto singled home a run for the Mets1 in the fifth, but the Twins responded with two in the sixth.  Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, a sacrifice fly tied the score, and an Alberoni Nunez single brought home the go-ahead run.  The Mets1 got a pair of one-out singles in the ninth, but a pair of fly outs ended the game.

Fredderi Soto pitched 4.1 innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits and a walk with one strikeout.  His ERA is 0.98.  Frandy Torres pitched 2.2 scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 1.08 with 26 strikeouts in 25 innings.  Nunez was 2-for-3 and is batting .348.  Yeltsin Encarnacion was 0-for-3 and is batting .352.  Juan Martinez was 0-for-3 and is batting .312.

DSL TWINS 13, DSL METS1 5 AT TWINS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Already leading 4-0, the Twins scored five in the fourth to take control of the game.  Ruben Santana had a two-run double in the inning.  The Mets1 got four runs back in the fifth, but the Twins responded with four of their own in the bottom of the fifth.

Andriu Marin pitched 4.2 innings, giving up four unearned runs on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts.  His ERA is 2.70.  Steven Cruz retired all four men he faced.  Zaino Henriquez was 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, and three runs.  Felix Reyes was 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, and three runs.  Victor Heredia was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Yeison Perez was 2-for-4.  Ruben Santana was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk and is batting .363.
