Minor Details: Games of July 27

Kyle Gibson pitches very well.  Dereck Rodriguez has a rare bad game.  Eduardo Del Rosario gives up a hit to the first batter he faces, then no more in eight innings in a very good high-A debut.  The Kernels get only one run and seven hits in two games, getting swept  An eleven-run inning drops the GCL Twins.

ROCHESTER 3, INDIANAPOLIS 1 IN INDIANAPOLIS

An infield out scored a run in the third, a sacrifice fly brought one home in the seventh, and a double play scored a run in the ninth.  Thus, the Red Wings scored three runs despite going 1-for-10 with men in scoring position.  The Indians loaded the bases with none out in the ninth, but a strikeout, a sacrifice fly, and another strikeout ended the game.

Kyle Gibson struck out five in five shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks.  He threw 69 pitches, so one assumes he was on a pitch count, although one doesn't know why.  His ERA is 2.08 with 23 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.  Alex Wimmers pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 3.00.  Rochester had seven hits, but no one had more than one.

An error allowed the Flying Tigers to score in the first, and the 1-0 lead held up until the fifth.  Then, however, a two-run homer by Tanner English and a solo shot by Jermaine Palacios gave the Miracle a 3-1 lead.  Palacios delivered a three-run single-plus-error in the sixth to make it 6-1.  Brent Rooker hit a two-run homer in a three-run ninth that put a period on the game.

Eduardo Del Rosario made a very successful high-A debut, pitching eight innings and giving up an unearned run on one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.  Palacios was 4-for-5 with a home run (his second) and three RBIs and is batting .323.  Zander Weil was 3-for-5.  Sean Miller and Shane Kennedy were each 2-for-5.  The home run by English was his sixth.  Rooker's home run was his first.

PEORIA 3, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN PEORIA (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Lewin Diaz singled home a run in the first, but that was the only lead the Kernels would have.  Brian O'Keefe delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the first and Danny Hudzina homered in the fourth for the Chiefs runs.  The Kernels had only three hits in the last six innings and never had more than one man on base at a time.

Tyler Beardsley pitched a six-inning complete game, giving up three runs on six hits and no walks with one strikeout.  Cedar Rapids had five hits and no one had more than one.

Evan Sanders pitched four innings, giving up four runs on just three hits but six walks.  He struck out four.  Patrick McGuff struck out three in two shutout innings to make his ERA 2.30 with 34 strikeouts in 27.1 innings.

  1. [Kyle Gibson's] ERA is 2.08 with 23 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.

Right-handed version of Tommy Milone: dominant in AAA but replacement-level in MLB.

  2. Looks like there was a 50-minute rain delay in the 6th, which must account for Gibson's early exit.

  3. Rooker's home run was his first.

I was like, "wait ... what!?!" Then I realized (learned) that he'd already been promoted and this was his first in 10 games for the Miracle. He hit 7 in 85 AB's with Elizabethton. My "investigation" indicated a hometown of Germantown, TN and I wondered if that was anywhere close to Joe O'Brien Field ... not so much. E-Town and G-Town quite literally couldn't be further apart and still within the state of Tennessee.
