Minor Details: Games of August 14

A big day for Nick Gordon.  Mitchell Kranson delivers the big hit in a Miracle win.  Royce Lewis gets two more hits.  Walks are key in an E-Twins win and a GCL Twins loss.  Michael Montero pitches well.

CHATTANOOGA 9, BIRMINGHAM 0 IN BIRMINGHAM

The Lookouts took a 1-0 lead in the first, then scored six in the fourth to take control of the game.  Nick Gordon had a two-run triple in the inning, Edgar Corcino followed with an RBI triple, and Jonathan Rodriguez hit a two-run homer.

It was a bullpen game for Chattanooga, but it was effective.  D. J. Baxendale started and pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk and striking out two.  His ERA is 2.25.  Glen Perkins struck out two in a scoreless inning.  Yohan Pino struck out four in three shutout innings to drop his ERA to 2.57 with a WHIP of 0.71 and 8 strikeouts in 7 innings.  Nick Anderson pitched a perfect inning to lower his ERA to 1.00 with a WHIP of 0.74 and 29 strikeouts in 27 innings.  Gabriel Moya struck out two in a scoreless inning to make his ERA 0.90 with a WHIP of 0.78 and 78 strikeouts in 50 innings.  Nick Gordon was 5-for-6 with a triple and a double, scoring three times.  Brian Navaretto was 3-for-5.  Andy Wilkins was 2-for-4 with two walks.  Ryan Walker was 2-for-5.  Corcino was 2-for-6 with a triple and is batting .308.  LaMonte Wade was 2-for-6.

FORT MYERS 6, LAKELAND 5 IN FORT MYERS

The Flying Tigers led 2-0, the Miracle led 4-2, and Lakeland got an RBI single from Luis Valdes to take a 5-4 lead in the eighth.  In the bottom of the ninth, a pair of singles put men on first and second with none out.  A bunt moved the runners to second and third and an intentional walk loaded the bases.  Mitchell Kranson then delivered a two-run single for a Miracle win.

Lewis Thorpe pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and four walks with three strikeouts.  His ERA is now 2.87 with 72 strikeouts in 69 innings.  Alex Robinson pitched a perfect inning.  Brian Olson was 2-for-4 and is batting .429.  Sean Miller and Zander Weil were each 2-for-5.  Chris Paul was 1-for-5 and is batting .347.

BURLINGTON 2, CEDAR RAPIDS 1 IN BURLINGTON

RBI singles by Leonardo Rivas and Richard Fecteau produced two Bees runs in the third.  A walk and an error produced a Kernel run in the eighth.  Cedar Rapids had men on second and third with two out in the eighth, but their last four batters were retired.

Tyler Beardsley struck out five in five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks.  Logan Lombana struck out five in three shutout innings to drop his ERA to 2.89.  Royce Lewis was 2-for-4 and is batting .538.

ELIZABETHTON 8, JOHNSON CITY 5 IN JOHNSON CITY

Trailing 2-1, the Twins scored five runs in the fourth to go into the lead to stay.  They had only three hits in the inning, all singles, and benefited from five walks, an error, and a wild pitch.  The Cardinals never got closer than three runs after that.

Nick Brown struck out five in 4.1 innings but allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk.  Jared Finkel pitched 4.2 innings, giving up an unearned run to lower his ERA to 2.88.  Wander Javier was 3-for-4 with a walk.  Matt Albanese was 2-for-3 with a home run (his third) and two walks and is batting .309.  Carson Crites was 2-for-4 with a walk and is batting .330.  T. J. Dixon was 2-for-6.  Andrew Bechtold was 0-for-4 with a walk and is batting .311.  Jose Miranda was 1-for-4 with a walk and is batting .302.

GCL RAYS 10, GCL TWINS 2 AT TWINS

Luis Leon's RBI single in the fifth broke a 2-2 tie.  The Rays then scored three in the seventh and three in the eighth to put the game out of reach.  Three walks and a hit batsman contributed to the seventh inning and four walks and two wild pitches contributed to the eighth inning.  Twins pitchers issued nine walks and four wild pitches in the game.

Chris Heston made his debut for the GCL Twins, striking out five in five innings but allowing three runs on seven hits and no walks.  Michael Kohn pitched a scoreless inning to make his ERA 1.80 with a WHIP of 0.60 and 7 strikeouts in 5 innings.  Jared Akins was 2-for-4.  Alex Robles was 0-for-4 and is batting .326.

DSL TWINS 8, DSL NATIONALS 4 AT TWINS

The Twins trailed 3-1 going to the bottom of the sixth, but RBI doubles by Yeltsin Encarnacion and Victor Heredia tied it 3-3.  The Twins then got two-run doubles by Ruben Santana and Mariano Calcano in a five-run inning that left them in control of the game.  The Nationals scored twice in the eighth and brought the tying run to the plate with two out, but their last four batters were retired.

Michael Montero struck out seven in five shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks.  His ERA is 2.60 with a WHIP of 0.92 and 59 strikeouts in 55.1 innings.  Santana was 4-for-5 with two doubles and is batting .348.  Encarnacion was 2-for-4 with a home run (his second) and a double and is batting .333.  Jesus Feliz was 2-for-5.
