Minor Details: Games of August 17

Kennys Vargas stays hot.  The Lookouts blow a big lead but make a big comeback.  Three Kernels pitchers throw a two-hit shutout.  Wander Javier hits a grand slam.  A big first inning carries the GCL Twins.

COLUMBUS 4, ROCHESTER 1 IN COLUMBUS

The Clippers scored two in the third to take a 2-0 lead.  Matt Hague doubled and scored in the fourth to cut it to 2-1, but Columbus scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to take control of the game.  The Red Wings did not get a hit after the fifth.

Drew Rucinski pitched 2.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout.  His ERA is now 2.96.  Mason Melotakis struck out three in 1.2 scoreless innings to drop his ERA to 1.77 with 21 strikeouts in 20.1 innings.  Kennys Vargas was 2-for-4 with a double.  He is 15-for-35 (.429) in his last nine games.

CHATTANOOGA 12, TENNESSEE 11 IN TENNESSEE

Edgar Corcino hit a grand slam in the fourth to give the Lookouts a 5-2 lead.  Jason Vosler hit a two-run homer in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4.  It was 6-4 going to the bottom of the eighth, when the Smokies scored seven times to take an 11-6 lead.  Charcer Burks had a two-run single and Trey Martin hit a three-run double in the inning.  In the ninth, Chattanooga came back to score six times and take the lead back.  They drew five walks in the inning, tied the game on a sacrifice fly, and went ahead on an RBI single by LaMonte Wade.  Tennessee got two singles in the bottom of the ninth to put men on first and second with two out, but a line out ended the game.

Dereck Rodriguez pitched four innings, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Todd Van Steensel pitched two shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.37 with 54 strikeouts in 52.2 innings.  Nick Anderson struck out three in a scoreless inning to make his ERA 0.94 with a WHIP of 0.77 with 32 strikeouts in 28.2 innings.  Wade was 3-for-6.  Alex Perez was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, and three runs.  Brian Navaretto was 2-for-4 with a double.  Max Murphy was 2-for-5.  Corcino was 1-for-4 with a home run (his third) and five RBIs and is batting .306.  Jonathan Rodriguez was 1-for-5 with a walk and is batting .306.

LAKELAND AT FORT MYERS

Game cancelled due to wet grounds.

CEDAR RAPIDS 8, BURLINGTON 0 IN BURLINGTON

Aaron Whitefield had an RBI double and scored on a Lewin Diaz single to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead.  Cedar Rapids then scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and three in the sixth to take control of the game.  The Bees did not get a hit until there were two out in the fifth and had only two hits in the game.

Patrick McGuff pitched four shutout innings, giving up no hits and two walks with one strikeout.  His ERA is 1.91.  Evan Sanders pitched three shutout innings.  Colton Davis struck out two in two shutout innings to drop his ERA to 2.95 with 79 strikeouts in 76.1 innings.  Whitefield was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs.  Diaz was 3-for-5 with a double.  Royce Lewis was 2-for-5 and is batting .409.  Travis Blankenhorn was 2-for-5.

ELIZABETHTON 11, BRISTOL 1 IN BRISTOL

Wander Javier hit a grand slam in a five-run second to put the Twins up 5-0.  Elizabethton then scored two in the third and three in the fourth and the rout was on.  The Pirates got their lone run in the fourth inning.

Randy Dobnak struck out five in five innings, giving up one run on six hits and three walks.  His ERA is 2.93 with a WHIP of 0.91.  Blair Lasko struck out five in three shutout innings.  Jose Martinez pitched a perfect inning to lower his ERA to 2.30 with a WHIP of 0.95.  Mark Contreras was 4-for-5 with two doubles.  J. J. Robinson was 3-for-5 with a home run, his seventh.  Akil Baddoo was 2-for-3 with a double and is batting .347.  Javier was 2-for-5 with a home run, his second, and four RBIs.  Carson Crites was 2-for-5 with a double and is batting .330.  Robert Molina and T. J. Dixon were each 2-for-5.

GCL TWINS 5, GCL RAYS 4 AT TWINS

Jared Akins hit a two-run homer in a four-run first for the Twins.  The Rays scored single runs in the first, second, and fourth to cut the lead to 4-3.  Jhon Alvarez singled and scored in the fifth to make it 5-3.  Thirteen Rays in a row were retired, but in the ninth the Rays scored once and had the tying run on third base before a strikeout ended the game.

Austin Bizzle pitched one inning, giving up one run on one hit and one walk with one strikeout.  Landon Leach then came in to pitch four innings, giving up two runs on two hits and a walk with no strikeouts.  Akins was 2-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk.

DSL PHILLIES RED AT DSL TWINS (1 INNING--SUSPENDED)

The game was suspended due to rain with two on and two out in the top of the second.  The score was 0-0.

Elizabethton is in first place by 2.5 games by Greeneville and Johnson City.
The GCL Twins are in first place by one game over the GCL Orioles.
The DSL Twins are in first place by 5.5 games over the DSL Mets1.

  1. Chattanooga won the first half and leads Montgomery by six games in the second half.

    Must be a pretty good team if they win both halves. Or it's a terrible division.

  2. Royce Lewis was 2-for-5 and is batting .409.

    Was curious how he's doing and good and bad. Hitting .409 is quite good. No walks and no extra base hits, not so good. Only 22 PAs.
