September 16, 2017: Go State!

College football is probably the sport that others know the most about, and I know the least about by comparison. However, I've heard rumors that there might actually be a decent hometown team this year. Could this be true?

      1. Who can forget his role as Ringo in the One of Our Chickens is Missing episode of Petticoat Junction? There's a decent chance I actually saw that since we always watched that show when I was a kid. I think the earliest movie I can remember him from is Kelly's Heroes. Always been a big fan.

    1. His recent album, Partly Fiction, was an absolute delight. His version of "Canción Mixteca" is so mournful & sweet, and hearing "She Thinks I Still Care" sung by a nonagenarian really lends a new reading to the song.

  1. My trip to St Louis to see U2 is now cancelled. Refund from Southwest, refund from U2, refund from Hilton, Ticketmaster keeps my money.

  2. Re: Gophers. They've had mixed results thus far. It all depends on their QB play, really. I've learned not to make any determinations in
September. I think Fleck is more about recruiting, so it might take a couple years to build the program, but it wasn't like he didn't have anything to work with.

  3. So, Pangaea – they know their beer. I don't think Societe existed when I still lived in San Diego. Probably a good thing, as I could spend a lot more time with both The Harlot & The Widow. The Upright Saison Vert had a ton of barnyard funk & leafy, green apple stuff going on, but the black lime imparted some characteristics the reminded me of traits I don't care for in most Chardonnay. Berryessa's Whippersnapper seems like a fantastic session beer; I just wasn't in a mild mood. The real stars of the evening were Upland's Guava Sour (so dang good) and Firestone Walker's Pacific Gravity Weizenbock, which the barkeep said nobody really orders since it doesn't fit the trends out here. It's definitely a cocktail drinker's beer, with all the raisiny, dried date, & banana flavors you'd find in an excellent rum or bourbon, yet lacking the hefty booziness of other high-test brews. It'd go over really well in the Midwest.

    1. I'm in Albuquerque for the weekend, and the beer scene has exploded. Lots of great beer, lots of shit. I can't believe that this city can sustain the kind of beer growth currently happening.

    2. Pangaea is a fun place. Didn't realize you were in town. Enjoy.

As long as you are in south Sac, you should consider dropping by Track7. You are within spitting distance from Pangaea anyway. And if you are headed into SF, you could worse than to go through Winters on your way and stop at Berryessa Brewing.

also, note the Ruhstaller hop farm along I-80 between Davisville and Dixon. Sadly, the taproom (really, a shed with some hay bales and picnic tables) got shut down because they toed over some regulatory line.
