Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of October 16

Chris Paul was the hero for Surprise.  Andrew Vasquez did well, too.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

Twins:  Chris Paul was 2-for-5.  LaMonte Wade was 1-for-4.  Andrew Vasquez retired all five men he faced, striking out one.  Tom Hackimer pitched one inning, giving up one run on three hits and no walks with one strikeout.

SURPRISE 9, SCOTTSDALE 8 IN SURPRISE

Trailing 8-3, Surprise got three in the eighth and three in the ninth to win.  Oscar Mercado's (St. Louis) two-run double tied it and Chris Paul had an RBI single to win it.  Sandy Alcantara (St. Louis) pitched three shutout innings, giving up no hits and one walk with one strikeout.

PEORIA 6, SALT RIVER 2 IN SALT RIVER

Leading 2-0, Peoria scored three in the seventh to take control of the game.  Lourdes Gurriel (Toronto) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs.  Max Fried (Atlanta) pitched five shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.

GLENDALE 2, MESA 0 IN MESA

Glendale scored single runs in the fourth and seventh.  Mesa had only three hits.  Francisco Mejia (Cleveland) was 2-for-4.  Yusniel Diaz (Dodgers) was 1-for-3 with a home run.  Elniery Garcia (Philadelphia) struck out five in four shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

CARACAS 6, ANZOATEGUI 3 IN ANZOATEGUI (GAME 1--9 INNINGS--SCHEDULED 7 INNINGS)

Alberto Cordero hit a two-run homer in a three-run ninth that made the difference in the game.  Cordero was 3-for-5.  Henry Alejandro Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with a double.

CARACAS 5, ANZOATEGUI 4 IN ANZOATEGUI (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Trailing 5-2, Anzoategui scored two in the sixth and put runners on first and second with two out, but their last four batters were retired.  Ramon Cabrera was 2-for-3.  Harold Castro was 2-for-4 with a triple.

MEXICAN LEAGUE
