  1. ... so Keuchel & Verlander ftw(s)!1??!
Some people have been alleging that it's more fun when the Yankees are in the playoffs, as it gives them a team to root against. I find that line of reasoning to be utter trash. No matter which two teams are playing - even if I haven't a predetermined preference - I always end up picking one to root for (and generally end up disappointed). To paraphrase quite a few people, "Rooting for the Yankees is like rooting for Goldman Sachs" ... I wish they'd end up like Lehman Bros.

      1. League average payroll vs. Tippy Top Payroll. Easy choice.

Of course, if its Dodgers/Yankees, I've decided I'm just not going to watch at all, so I disagree with what some people have been alleging.

(I'm still not upset the Clevelands are out, though.)

            1. Last night was awesome when Baez tagged him trying to advance, waved a finger in his face, and Puig just laughed. I love watching players enjoy the game.

      2. If its Astros-Dodgers, then I want it to be a 7 game series of good baseball and however wins I'm cool with that.
If its Astros-Cubs , I want an Astros sweep
If its Yankees-Dodgers, I wouldnt mind a 5 or 6 game series with the Dodgers winning
If Yankee-Cubs , I'll watch but cheer against both teams (maybe pull tor the Cubs?)

        1. The Yankees-Cubs one is tough. Both managers annoy me. The Cubs don't have Chapman or Gardner which is a plus, but they have Lester and Lackey. But I also wouldn't mind seeing Aaron Judge hit like 8 homers in a series (though the media coverage would be insufferable). I'd probably root for the Cubs because I love Baez so much.

      3. I would definitely root for the Astros what with Houston needing a lift after Harvey plus the Astros never winning the World Series. I would have no problem rooting for the Dodgers against the Yankees since the Dodgers haven't been to the World Series since winning it in '88 plus Angels fans annoy me and this would piss them off.

    1. And yet, Houston is going to be good.

Just finished watching the second half. Chris Paul was bad. The Warriors did not take care of the ball in the 4th quarter, and Harden and Co. made them pay.

    1. My dad experienced one of the protests in Madison, but not until a few years after this one. I don't believe he went with the intent to protest ... mostly just to see, and what he saw shook him pretty damn well & good.

      1. Did he say what the protest was about? In 2019 we’ll mark the fiftieth anniversary of the protests that led to the creation of the Afro-American Studies department. The National Guard was called out to that one. I have a scan of a photo of Guardsmen behind a Jeep-mounted .30-cal machine gun pointed at students.

        1. I don't recall if he told me. I remember his description of what he saw and felt more vividly than any sense of what prompted the protest. Your 9:47 LTE prompted a text to him ... waiting to see what he has to say.

  2. So, from what I'm understanding I should not, under any circumstances, watch the Gordon Hayward injury from last night?

        1. If I were sitting near the him, I'd be a little concerned about the guy that stands up to try to get a better look...

          1. Joe Theismann will always stick in my mind. I think that was back before they thought, "you know what, maybe there are some things that you shouldn't replay over and over again."

            1. That was the worst I've ever seen. Another terrible, terrible injury was Tim Krumrie in the Super Bowl. His leg snapped in a non-contact situation, which was astoundingly awful. The Hayward injury was freakish and awful and heartbreaking. He had played five minutes for the Celtics when this happened.

              1. It was more severe than Mauer's knee injury as a rookie, but I remember all that anticipation being washed away by that slide on the warning track at the Metrodome.

              2. I think to Dave Dravecky's arm snapping in mid pitch.

              1. Posey isn't why the rule changed, it's because of Avila. Posey was injured in 2011 but the rule wasn't in place until 2014. Avila was injured, albeit not as severely as Posey, in the 2013 ALCS. I do think Posey's injury made it possible for it to change however. Having your dad on the rule committee team makes it a lot easier to propose new rules that protect you.

          2. There were no cameras recording Teddy Bridgewater's injury at practice last year, but by all accounts it was pretty horrific. They weren't sure he was ever going to return or even walk again.

    1. I saw it live. It was gruesome. I was so excited to watch that game -- and it was a pretty exciting game right to the very last second, but after the injury I was just sick to my stomach.

I thought about this last night, though. GH is getting paid 9 figures to play for the Celtics. People get hurt and killed at work every day for a lot less. So....

      Nope. Still sickened by it.

      1. Getting seriously injured on the job is bad, no matter the job. Preventing workplace deaths & injuries is always good business. Supporting the people effected – and holding the culpable parties legally & financialy responsible – is a crucial piece of occupational, financial, & medical security, especially for non-salaried workers & their families.

  3. Perkins is a free agent. I wonder if he tries to come back for 2018 or not.

    1. I suspect he will. He worked awfully hard to get this far. Unless he's convinced that there's no way he can be an effective major league pitcher again, I think he'll try again next season.

      1. If I were Perkins or Mauer and planned to re-sign with my hometown team, I would have my agent write into the contract that all media requests from anyone at the Star Tribune are to be immediately & pointedly refused.
