Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of October 19

Tom Hackimer was our star yesterday.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

Twins:  Sean Miller was 0-for-4.  Andrew Vasquez struck out two in one inning but gave up one run on two hits.  Tom Hackimer pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout.

MESA 6, SURPRISE 4 IN SURPRISE (10 INNINGS)

It was tied after nine, so the goofy "start with a man on second" rule came into play.  Taylor Gushue (Washington) singled in a run and a Kody Eaves (Detroit) solo homer made it 6-4 Mesa.  Surprise was retired in order in the bottom of the tenth.  Daniel Johnson (Washington) was 3-for-5 for Mesa.  It appears that, when the man who starts on second scores, it is scored as an unearned run, at least in this league.

SCOTTSDALE 13, PEORIA 7 IN PEORIA

Scottsdale led 4-1 after two, but Peoria came back to lead 7-6 after five before Scottsdale got two in the sixth and four in the seventh to take control.  Kyle Holder (Yankees) was 4-for-6 with a home run and a triple, driving in three.  David Thompson (Mets) was 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and a walk, scoring three times.  Estevan Florial (Yankees) was 3-for-5 with a triple and a double.

SALT RIVER 5, GLENDALE 1 IN SALT RIVER

A three-run seventh put Salt River ahead 5-0.  Braxton Lee (Miami) was 3-for-4 with a double.  Zach Jemiola (Colorado) pitched five shutout innings, giving up five hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

ZULIA 6, MARGARITA 4 IN MARGARITA

Zulia scored three in the eighth to turn a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 win.  Bryant Flete was 3-for-5 with a double.  Zach Houchins was 2-for-2 with a home run (his second), a double, and two walks.

LARA 8, ANZOATEGUI 3 IN LARA

Lara trailed 3-2 but scored four in the seventh and two in the eighth.  Henry Urrutia's three-run double put Lara in the lead.  Urrutia was 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.  Jesus Montero was 2-for-3 with a home run (his fourth) and a walk.  Rangel Ravelo hit a two-run homer.  Balbino Fuenmayor was 3-for-3 with a double and a walk for Anzoategui.

MAGALLANES 9, CARACAS 3 IN MAGALLANES

Caracas led 3-0 after an inning and a half, but Magallanes scored two in the second, two in the third, and led 6-3 before putting the game out of reach with three in the eighth.  Jesus Valdez was 4-for-4 with a home run (his second), a walk, and three RBIs. Jose Peraza was 3-for-5 with a double.

LA GUAIRA 1, ARAGUA 0 IN LA GUAIRA

Jesus Castillo singled in a run in the first and that was all it took.  Isaias Tejada was 2-for-4 with a double.  Tommy Collier pitched six shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks with four strikeouts.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

LOS MOCHIS 6, JALISCO 5 IN LOS MOCHIS

Los Mochis led 6-1 after two.  Jalisco scored four in the fourth to get back into the game, but could do no more.  Jalisco left the bases loaded in the fifth and had at least one man on base in every subsequent inning.  Ramon Urias was 3-for-4 with a triple, a double, and a walk.  Yadir Drake was 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk.

OBREGON 6, NAVOJOA 3 IN OBREGON

Obregon scored three in the first and led all the way.  Irving Falu (remember him?) was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Cedric Hunter hit a two-run homer, his third.  David Reyes struck out ten in five innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.

MEXICALI 5, CULIACAN 4 IN MEXICALI

Mexicali scored two in the second to take a 3-2 lead.  They led 5-2 when Culiacan scored two in the sixth.  Culiacan had the tying run on second in both the sixth and the ninth.  Chris Roberson was 3-for-5 with a home run.  Rolando Valdez pitched five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  D'Arby Myers was 3-for-5 for Culiacan.

MAZATLAN 4, HERMOSILLO 0 IN HERMOSILLO

Brian Hernandez homered in the first, Corey Brown homered in the third and in the sixth, and Mazatlan cruised to a win.  Alejandro Soto struck out seven in 5.2 scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk.
