Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of November 7

Not a lot of Twins action.  What success there was came in the AFL.

ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE

Twins:  Chris Paul  was 1-for-5.  Sean Miller was 1-for-4.

SURPRISE 6, GLENDALE 1 IN GLENDALE

Surprise scored four in the first and two in the seventh to go up 6-0.  Nicky Lopez (Kansas City) was 2-for-5 with a home run.  Burch Smith (Tampa Bay) struck out four in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and no walks.

MESA 5, PEORIA 1 IN MESA

Kody Eaves (Detroit) hit an RBI triple in the fourth to tie it 1-1 and later scored to give Mesa a 2-1 lead.  They added two in the fifth on Sheldon Neuse's (Oakland) two-run double and were in control the rest of the way.  Spencer Turnbull (Detroit) pitched four innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

SALT RIVER 3, SCOTTSDALE 2 IN SALT RIVER

Salt River scored two in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead, with Anthony Santander (Baltimore) singling home the go-ahead run.  Scottsdale did not get a man past first after that.  Monte Harrison (Milwaukee) was 3-for-4 with a home run, his fourth.  James Needy (Miami) struck out nine in four shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.  Tyler Beede (San Francisco) struck out five in five innings for Scottsdale, giving up one run on four hits and a walk.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

MAGALLANES 10, CARACAS 6 IN CARACAS

Caracas took a 3-0 lead in the first, but Magallanes got two in the second, two in the third, and five in the fourth to take control of the game.  Caracas scored three in the ninth to make the final score look better.  Ronny Cedeno was 4-for-5 with a double and three runs.  Mario Lisson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  Drew Gagnon struck out seven in five innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk.  Jesus Guzman was 3-for-4 with two doubles for Caracas.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

NAVOJOA 5, LOS MOCHIS 2 IN NAVOJOA

Los Mochis got two in the first, Navojoa got five in the second, and that was it.  Jovan Rosa was 4-for-4 with a home run (his sixth) and a double, driving in three.  Eddie Gamboa pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

HERMOSILLO 2, CULIACAN 1 IN CULIACAN

Hermosillo scored one in the first and fifth, while Culiacan got its lone run in the sixth.  Each team missed plenty of chances, as Hermosillo left twelve men on and Culiacan left six.  Domonic Brown was 3-for-4 with a walk.  Chandler Shepherd pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts.  For Culiacan Sebastian Elizalde hit a home run, his third.  Dusten Knight struck out four in four innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits and two walks.

MAZATLAN 11, OBREGON 3 IN MAZATLAN

Mazatlan scored four in the second to go up 5-0 and put the game away with six in the fifth to make it 11-2.  Jose Aguilar was 4-for-5 with a double.  Carlos Alberto Gastelum was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.  Corey Brown hit a home run, his fourth.  Walter Silva pitched three shutout innings, giving up one hit and no walks while striking out two.  Ricardo Valenzuela hit a home run for Obregon.

MEXICALI 5, JALISCO 4 IN MEXICALI (10 INNINGS)

Mexicali led 1-0 and 3-1, fell behind 4-3, tied it on Luis Juarez' RBI single in the eighth, and won it on J. P. Sportman's two-out single in the tenth.  Juarez and C. J. Retherford were each 2-for-4 with a home run, the fourth for Retherford.  Miguel Pena pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and five walks with no strikeouts.  Agustin Murillo was 3-for-4 for Jalisco.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  David Hurlbut (Licey) pitched three shutout innings, but his final line reads 3.1 innings, four runs, six hits, no walks, and two strikeouts.  Carlos Paulino (Gigantes) was 0-for-3.

TOROS 8, LICEY 7 IN LICEY

Anderson Feliz hit a three-run triple in a four-run fourth that put the Toros in the lead 6-4 and they led the rest of the way.  Licey scored two in the ninth and had the tying run on second when the game ended.  Raudy Read was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, his second.  For Licey, Yamaico Navarro was 3-for-3 with a double and two walks.  Juan Francisco was 2-for-5 with a three-run homer, his second.

ESTRELLAS 4, GIGANTES 2 AT ESTRELLAS

Gabriel Guerrero's two-run single in the fifth put the Estrellas up 3-2.  Sandber Pimentel was 1-for-2 with a triple and two walks.  For the Gigantes, Richard Urena hit a home run and Paul Clemens pitched four innings, giving up one run on one hit and five walks while striking out one.

AGUILAS 8, ESCOGIDO 1 AT AGUILAS

The Aguilas scored two in the first and five in the third to take a 7-0 lead.  Wilmer Difo was 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs.  Juan Perez was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer (his third) and a walk.  Ronny Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a home run, his third.  Richelson Pena struck out six in six shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk.  Ronny Paulino hit a home run, his second, for Escogido's lone run.
