  1. I don't know what possessed me to change my avatar to Jeter faking being HBP a while back, but I must say that the timing was exquisite! Re2pect!

    1. It’s really too bad it’s the Marlins that he’s going to run into the ground. Nobody* cares about that team.

      * The Marlins have been last in the NL in attendance five straight seasons. They jumped all the way up to 12th when Marlins Park opened in 2012, which was the last year they’ve cracked even 1.8 million in attendance. For the six seasons preceding that, they were dead last in a 16 team league. When they won the World Series in 2003 they were 15th out of 16 teams. The year before that they barely drew 800,000 fans.

      1. Wait, isn’t this the plot from major league 73? Fan favorite buys ailing team and runs them into the ground so that the team can be moved to the big city? The plot is foiled when joe Mauer is traded to the marlins as their staring *catcher* (bad knees, calls his shot to beat the Yankees in game 7 of the alcs, falls in love with a woman he should have married a long time ago) and lights a fire under their asses. Hilarity ensues. Box office smash.

    2. Sounds like Christian Yelich & J.T. Realmuto don’t want to work on Jetes’ farm no more:

        1. The Marlins assessment of values reminds me of how kids understand money. 12 pennies is worth 11 more than one quarter!

          1. Good point.

Depending on how Free Agency goes, I just wonder if the MLBPA is going to get involved with the Marlins for having a really low payroll. It wouldn't be the first time

              1. If it guarantees a percentage of revenue, a cap would be a good move for MLBPA. They've moved below other leagues in terms of player compensation as a percentage of revenue.

              2. I think they should have a cap around $170M, and no floor, but they should agree to pay a minimum percentage of revenue to the players, and if player base salaries come short of that percentage, they should give everyone a bonus proportional to their base pay. Along with that, they should have more aggressive revenue sharing so that teams can comfortably pay at least $130M in salary.

As much as I hate what is happening in Miami (and I do hate it), I don't like how a floor would work to arbitrarily move contracts onto particular teams just to meet the floor. It's better to just pay players proportional to their perceived worth and then give everyone a bump to make whole the players as a group.

I think a scenario like this would also make tanking less attractive, because with more parity, more teams would have a shot at signing free agents and it would be suboptimal to only sign free agents at the end of a rebuild, having passed up the chance to sign them while you were tanking.

  2. Last night I made the pressure cooker chicken chili verde that folks have been raving about. It’s every bit as delicious as has been described. I followed the recipe for the most part to get a baseline for future improvisation, but I as happened to have some roasted Hatch chiles in the freezer, I added a couple for a little extra pizzazz. I’m really looking forward to leftovers at lunch.

      1. I gotta admit, it's had a big impact in my kitchen. I talk about it a lot, but I hope I don't go all crossfit about it.

          1. Wait, is that who I think it is? checks interwebz hmph, it appears that it is. That's an ... interesting choice for that thread bS.

  3. Question to the curlers: After you miss a shot, does your skip point to the spot where the shot was supposed to go? Seems like a dick move to me.

    1. No, that would be a dick move because I can't think of any other reason for doing it other than saying you messed up unless for some reason they aren't telling you where they want it before you throw. When we miss shots we talk about why we missed, like what the skip might have seen on our slide or release or the what have you. Stuff that you can use to work on your delivery.

      1. Part of the problem is that we're all beginners. The other part of the problem is that he has some personal issues with me (our daughters used to be friends).

this does not sound like a recipe for having fun.

          1. I've lived in Minnesota for 20 years so i think the appropriate response is that it is interesting.

        2. Is he a beginner as well? I mean, this is my eighth year and I still often don't get it where my skip wants it. Now, I've been friends with my skip for 17 years, so there's no personal problems. Still , though, the ice seems like a good place to put personal differences aside.

  4. Ex-Twins news:

Eric Fryer signs a minor league contract with Philadelphia with an invitation to spring training.
Seattle grants Andrew Albers his release so he can play in Japan.

  5. Wait, the Lakers retired both of Kobe's numbers? I really want to know when we actually switched over to bizarro world.
