Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of December 17

Once again we will have to give you an incomplete report, as mlb.com has not updated the scores.  I'll give you the completed report as soon as I can, but if the scores are not updated this morning "as soon as I can" will be sometime tomorrow.

I can tell you that Kennys Vargas and Gregorio Petit had good days.

Update:  We're closer now, with just a couple of games we still haven't heard about.

Further update:  Today, December 20, we finally got a box score on the last games.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Gregorio Petit (Caracas) was 2-for-3.

LA GUAIRA 11,  CARACAS 4 IN LA GUAIRA

Caracas jumped to a 4-0 lead, but La Guaira scored three in the third and five in the fourth to go into the lead to stay.  Alex Torres struck out eight in six innings for La Guaira, giving up four runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks.  For Caracas, Felix Perez hit a home run, his ninth.

ANZOATEGUI 8, ARAGUA 1 IN ANZOATEGUI

Anzoategui scored three in the first and two in the second to take a 5-0 lead.  Rene Reyes was 3-for-5 with a home run (his fourth) and a triple, driving in three.  Alexi Amarista was 3-for-4 with a home run and a double.  Rafael Ortega hit a home run.  Yeiper Castillo pitched 6.2 innings, giving up an unearned run on three hits and a walk and striking out two.

MAGALLANES 7, LARA 1 IN LARA

Magallanes scored four in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.  Derek Eitel pitched five innings, giving up one run on three hits and two walks and striking out two.

MARGARITA 4, ZULIA 2 IN ZULIA

A three-run sixth gave Margarita a 4-0 lead.  Jose Osuna hit a home run, his fourth.  Logan Darnell pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and two walks and striking out six.  Logan Duran pitched four innings for Zulia, giving up one run on three hits and one walk and striking out two.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

NAVOJOA 2, CULIACAN 0 IN CULIACAN

Navojoa scored single runs in the second and sixth.  No box score was available at this writing.

JALISCO AT HERMOSILLO

Rained out.

OBREGON 9, LOS MOCHIS 3 IN LOS MOCHIS

Obregon scored six in the first and led all the way.  Moises Gutierrez was 3-for-5 with two doubles.  Arturo Rodriguez hit a home run, his second.  Irwin Delgado struck out seven in seven innings, giving up three runs on ten hits and one walk.  For Los Mochis, Juan Camacho was 3-for-4.

MEXICALI 4, MAZATLAN 2 at Mazatlan

C. J. Retherford homered in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and Ramon Rios homered in the sixth for an insurance run.  Leo German was 3-for-5 with a double.  Retherford was 2-for-3 with a walk and the home run was his tenth.  Rios was 2-for-4 and the home run was his second.  Miguel Pena pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks and striking out three.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Kennys Vargas (Aguilas) was 3-for-5 with a home run (his second) and three runs.

AGUILAS 11, LICEY 8 IN LICEY

The Aguilas scored five in the second and led 6-0 half-way through.  Licey came back with four in the bottom of the fifth, but the Aguilas got five more in the seventh to take control of the game.  Vargas, as noted above, was the offensive star for the Aguilas.  Edwin Espinal was 3-for-5.  Zoilo Almonte was 3-for-6 with a double and four RBIs.  Ronny Rodriguez was 3-for-6.  Christian Bethancourt was 2-for-5 with a triple and three RBIs.  For Licey, Juan Francisco hit a three-run homer, his sixth.

GIGANTES 6, ESTRELLAS 1 AT GIGANTES

The Gigantes scored two in the first and led all the way.  Leury Garcia hit a home run, his third.  Gaby Hernandez struck out six in five innings, giving up one run on two hits.

ESCOGIDO 3, TOROS 0 AT TOROS

Escogido scored all three of their runs in the second inning.  Vidal Nuno pitched seven shutout innings, giving up one hit and two walks and striking out six.  For the Toros, Raul Valdes pitched a complete game, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk and striking out three.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Aaron Whitefield (Brisbane) was 1-for-2.  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 3-for-4 with three doubles, scoring once and driving in one.

CANBERRA 4, PERTH 3 IN CANBERRA (11 INNINGS)

Perth scored three in the ninth to tie it 3-3.  Despite starting with men on first and second, neither team scored in the tenth and Perth did not score in the eleventh.  Robbie Perkins singled home the winning run.  Lake Bachar pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and two walks and striking out four.

SYDNEY 7, MELBOURNE 4 IN MELBOURNE

Sydney scored two in the eighth to take a 4-3 lead and added three in the ninth to put the game out of reach.  For Melbourne, Delmon Young was 3-for-5 and Tyler Neslony was 2-for-2 with a home run (his second) and three walks.

BRISBANE 5, ADELAIDE 0 IN ADELAIDE

Brisbane scored one in the first, one in the fourth, and three in the sixth.  Wade was the batting star, as set forth above.  Donald Lutz hit a home run, his sixth.  Justin Erasmus pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and striking out four.
