Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of January 2

Another good day for Willians Astudillo.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Willians Astudillo (Anzoategui) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Gregorio Petit (Caracas) was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

LARA 4, ZULIA 3 IN LARA (13 INNINGS)

Zulia scored two in the ninth to tie it 3-3, but in the bottom of the thirteenth, Henry Urrutia singled home the winning run.  Juniel Querecuto was 5-for-6 with a walk for Lara.  Rangel Ravelo was 3-for-4 with a walk.  Junior Guerra pitched seven innings, giving up an unearned run on four hits and a walk and striking out six.

Lara leads the series 1-0.

ANZOATEGUI 6, MAGALLANES 5 IN MAGALLANES

Anzoategui scored three in the second and three in the third to take a 6-0 lead, then held on.  Magallanes scored two in the ninth to cut the lead to 6-5 and had the bases loaded with one out.  For Anzoategui, Luis Jimenez was 1-for-2 with two walks and a home run.  Rene Reyes was 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Daryl Thompson pitched six shutout innings, giving up six hits and striking out one.  For Magallanes, Jesus Sucre was 3-for-4 with a home run.

Anzoategui leads the series 1-0.

CARACAS 11, ARAGUA 8 IN CARACAS

Caracas scored in the first and led all the way.  Aragua cut the lead to one twice and two once, but could never catch up.  For Caracas, Wilfredo Tovar was 4-for-5 with a home run and a double, scoring three times.  For Aragua, Gustavo Nunez was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Caracas leads the series 1-0.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

JALISCO 4, CULIACAN 2 IN CULIACAN

Donald Dewees, Jr. doubled in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.  Gabriel Gutierrez was 2-for-4 with a home run for Jalisco.  For Culiacan, Sebastian Elizalde was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer.  Salvador Valdez pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk and striking out one.

Jalisco tied the series 1-1.

NAVOJOA 3, HERMOSILLO 0 IN NAVOJOA

Navojoa scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth.  Hector Velasquez pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and two walks and striking out three.

Navojoa leads the series 2-0.

MEXICALI 3, MAZATLAN 2 IN MEXICALI (11 INNINGS)

C. J. Retherford hit a walk-off homer to lead off the bottom of the eleventh.  Rolando Valdez struck out nine in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a walk.  For Mazatlan, Mitch Lively pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks and striking out four.

Mexicali leads the series 2-0.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

GIGANTES 4, AGUILAS 2 AT GIGANTES

The Gigantes scored two in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie.  Jose Siri hit a home run, his second of the playoffs.  Raul Valdes struck out seven in five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and two walks.

LICEY 4, ESCOGIDO 1 IN LICEY

Licey scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead.  For Licey, Yermin Mercedes hit a two-run homer.  Bryan Evans struck out seven in five shutout innings, giving up three hits and a walk.
