Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of January 7

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Willians Astudillo (Anzoategui) was 1-for-4 with a run.

LARA 7, ZULIA 3 IN ZULIA

Trailing 3-2 after eight, Lara scored five in the ninth to win the game and the series.  Elvis Escobar had a three-run triple in the inning.  Escobar was 2-for-3 and also had a walk.  Junior Guerra pitched 5.1 innings, giving up one run on five hits and three walks and striking out two.  For Zulia, Alex Romero was 3-for-5 with a double.  Logan Duran pitched six innings, giving up two runs on five hits and three walks and striking out four.

Lara wins the series 4-1.

ARAGUA 6, CARACAS 5 IN ARAGUA

Aragua lost a 5-3 lead in the eighth, but Jose Vargas delivered a game-winning RBI single in the ninth.  Gustavo Nunez was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk, scoring three times.  For Caracas, Henry Alejandro Rodriguez was 3-for-5 with a double.  Ramon Cabrera and Carlos Franco were each 3-for-4.

Caracas leads the series 3-2.

ANZOATEGUI 8, MAGALLANES 7 IN ANZOATEGUI

Trailing 6-5, Anzoategui scored three in the sixth to go into the lead to stay.  Magallanes cut the lead to one in the ninth but did not get the tying run on base.  Niuman Romero was 3-for-4 with three RBIs.  Luis Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a double and a three-run homer, his third home run of the post-season.  Balbino Fuenmayor hit a home run.  For Magallanes, Alberth Martinez was 3-for-4.  Dustin Martin was 2-for-4 with a home run, his second of the post-season.

Anzoategui wins the series 4-1.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

JALISCO 2, CULIACAN 0 IN CULIACAN

Jalisco scored single runs in the fourth and ninth.  Japhet Amador hit a home run, his fourth of the post-season.  Jabari Blash hit a home run, his second of the post-season.  David Reyes pitched five no-hit innings, giving up three walks and striking out four.  For Culiacan, Amilcar Gaxiola pitched five innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk and striking out one.

Jalisco tied the series 3-3.

MEXICALI 10, MAZATLAN 1 IN MEXICALI

Mexicali scored three in the fourth and four in the sixth to build a 7-0 lead.  Walter Ibarra was 3-for-5 with a double.  Chris Roberson was 3-for-5.  Luis Juarez was 3-for-5.  Xorge Carrillo was 1-for-2 with a home run and three RBIs.  Sergio Mitre pitched six shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out five.

Mexicali wins the series 4-2.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI.  Todd Van Steensel (Sydney) struck out two in 1.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks.

BRISBANE 13, SYDNEY 5 IN SYDNEY

Brisbane trailed 4-0 after one, but a five-run fourth put them up 6-4 and a four-run sixth gave them a 10-5 lead.  Andrew Campbell was 4-for-6 with two  home runs, his fourth and fifth.  T. J. Bennett was 3-for-3 with a home run (his ninth) and two walks, driving in three.  Logan Wade was 3-for-4.  Kenshi Sugiya was 3-for-6 with a double.  Adam Weisenburger was 2-for-3 with a home run (his third), a double, and a walk, scoring three times.  For Sydney, Chih-Hsien Chiang was 4-for-6 with a three-run homer, his eighth.  Connor McDonald was 2-for-5 with a double and a home run, his fifth.

PERTH 5, ADELAIDE 3 IN ADELAIDE

Perth scored two in the fourth to break a 2-2 tie.  Luke Hughes was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two walks.  For Adelaide, Tai-Shan Chang was 3-for-4 with a home run, his third.

CANBERRA 11,  MELBOURNE 6 IN MELBOURNE

Canberra scored five in the seventh and built a 10-0 lead.  Jay Baum was 4-for-5 with a home run (his fourth) and a double, driving in three.  Buddy Reed was 2-for-4 with a home run (his fifth) and three runs.  Robbie Perkins hit a grand slam, his third homer.  Steven Kent struck out nine in six innings, giving up three hits and three walks.  For Melbourne, Brett Cumberland was 2-for-3 with a home run (his seventh), a double, and two walks.  Darryl George was 2-for-5 with a home run, his fifth.  Delmon Young hit a grand slam, his fifth homer.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 0-for-6.  Nelson Molina (Mayaguez) was 0-for-1.

CAGUAS 11, SANTURCE 0 IN CAGUAS (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Caguas scored six in the second and was never threatened.  Jack Lopez was 2-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk.  Johnny Monell hit a two-run homer.  Ivan Maldonado pitched five shutout innings, giving up four hits and a walk and striking out one.

CAGUAS 3, SANTURCE 2 IN CAGUAS (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Caguas scored two in the third on four walks and a wild pitch to take a 3-2 lead.  Caguas had only one hit.  Carlos Contreras pitched five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks.  For Santurce, Domek Tomscha was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and a walk.

CAROLINA 2, MAYAGUEZ 0 IN MAYAGUEZ (GAME 1--7 INNINGS)

Carolina scored single runs in the third and fifth.  Aldemar Burgos was 3-for-4.  Mario Santiago pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, giving up three hits and a walk and striking out five.  For Mayaguez, Jonathan Sanchez pitched three innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out two.

MAYAGUEZ 2, CAROLINA 0 IN MAYAGUEZ (GAME 2--7 INNINGS)

Mayaguez scored single runs in the first and fifth.  Andrew Barbosa pitched three shutout innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out two.  Three of the four games these teams have played have been decided by a score of 2-0.
