Off-Season’s Greetings: Games of January 12

Several Twins had good days.

VENEZUELAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Willians Astudillo (Anzoategui) was 2-for-4.  Gregorio Petit (Caracas) was 0-for-3.

ANZOATEGUI 4, CARACAS 0 IN CARACAS

Anzoategui scored two in the fifth and two in the ninth.  Rene Reyes was 3-for-3 with a home run and two walks, driving in three.  Rafael Ortega was 3-for-3 with a double.  Daryl Thompson pitched 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk and striking out two.

Anzoategui ties the series 1-1.

LARA 7, MAGALLANES 2 IN LARA

Lara scored one in the first and four in the third to build a 5-0 lead.  Junior Querecuto was 3-for-5.  Alex Romero was 2-for-3 with two walks and three RBIs.  Junior Guerra pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks and striking out three.

Lara leads the series 2-0.

MEXICAN LEAGUE

No games scheduled.

DOMINICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  None.

LICEY 4, GIGANTES 3 IN LICEY

Licey led 4-1 after five.  Adrian Nieto hit a two-run homer for the Gigantes in the eighth to cut the lead to one but did not get the tying run past first base.  For Licey, Donovan Solano hit a home run.  Pedro Echemendia pitched five innings, giving up one run on five hits and two walks and striking out four.  Nieto was 2-for-3 with a walk in addition to the home run and drove in three.

AGUILAS 3, ESCOGIDO 2 AT AGUILAS (11 INNINGS)

Ronny Rodriguez singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh.  Richelson Pena pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and a walk and striking out three.  For Escogido, Jonathan Castellanos pitched six innings, giving up one run on five hits and a walk and striking out two.  The teams combined for eighteen hits, all singles.

AUSTRALIAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Logan Wade (Brisbane) was 3-for-5 with two home runs (his third and fourth) and three RBIs.  Aaron Whitefield (Brisbane) was 1-for-5 with a double and two runs.

CANBERRA 6, ADELAIDE 0 IN CANBERRA

Canberra scored one in the first, three in the third, and two in the eighth.  David Kandilas was 3-for-4 with two home runs (his seventh and eighth), scoring three times and driving in three.  Jay Baum was 3-for-4 with a double.  Frank Gailey struck out eleven in seven shutout innings, giving up two hits and a walk.

BRISBANE 12, MELBOURNE 5 IN BRISBANE

Leading 5-2, Brisbane scored seven in the fifth to put the game out of reach.  Logan Wade was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his third and fourth) and three RBIs.  Andrew Campbell was 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.  Chih-Sheng Lin hit a two-run homer, his eighth.  Hung-Wen Chen struck out eight in six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks.  For Melbourne, Michael Crouse was 3-for-5 with a double and a home run (his third), scoring three times.  Brisbane scored in double digits for the fourth consecutive games, scoring sixty-two runs in that span.

PERTH 6, SYDNEY 4 IN PERTH

Matt Kennelly hit a three-run double in a four-run eighth to put Sydney in the lead to stay.  Kennelly was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.  Kyle Simon struck out nine in six innings, giving up two unearned runs on six hits and a walk.  For Syndey, Lars Anderson was 3-for-5.  Craig Anderson pitched seven innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks and striking out five.

PUERTO RICAN LEAGUE

Twins:  Kennys Vargas (Mayaguez) was 1-for-1 with a home run (his third) and four walks, scoring twice.  Nelson Molina (Mayaguez) was 0-for-1.  Dereck Rodriguez (Mayaguez) struck out two in a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

MAYAGUEZ 10, CAROLINA 3 IN CAROLINA

Jiandido Tromp hit a three-run homer in the fourth to give Mayaguez a 4-3 lead and Mayaguez went on to take control of the game.  Tromp was 2-for-6 and the home run was his second.  Kennys Vargas was 1-for-1 with four walks and a home run, his third.

CAGUAS 4, SANTURCE 3 IN SANTURCE

David Vidal was 3-for-4 for Caguas.  Ivan Maldonado pitched 5.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks and striking out three.  For Santurce, Rey Fuentes hit a home run.
