  1. So, ii on Facebook live is making slight concessions to Sabermetrics, saying that analytics are important but should not be the concern of the players. His take is that if a batter is shown to be poor at bringing in the runner from third, it's up to the coaches to use that data to coach/train the player to make the adjustments the data shows is needed.

I think if the player has any intelligence at all he's going to want to also know what the stats are showing and seek out help if it's needed. I don't think any coaches were standing in line to help Breslow/Perkins/Gibson in the off-season when they took it upon themselves to make adjustments.

    1. Yea, that's a pretty ignorant view of the modern player. They are business people, or need to be. The dumb ones will need to be coached. The smart ones will ask to be coached and will be looking for ways to improve/maintain.

      1. Being in middle management suggests to me that this isn't just related to players and coaches as I have a few employees who are of the dumb less motivated variety

        1. Oh, sure, me too. The difference is that these guys are in a HIGHLY competitive labor market (not as cutthroat competitive as the NFL, but damned competitive). You have to survive long enough to make bank, and then you have to fight to continue making bank. That tends to weed out the lazy and indolent, if not all of the stupid.

In my world, good management can make a difference to productivity of line workers, but it is hard to measure. And we (gubmint) don't have clear maximands -- we have no profit motive to motivate. Same is broadly true in bureaucratic organizations of all stripes where the nexus between productivity and profit is remote.

  2. Das kleine Projekt ist beendet. Fantastisch!

So for the last couple weeks I've been doing "small projects" around the place. We have an oldish home (circa 1920) in H'landia, and the need for repair/replace/redo is legion. In our living room, I've noticed that there are many paint scuffles/chips on the wall along the edge of the floor (from endless vacuum cleaners banging against 1920's lead-paint). So this became today's small project...

After dropping off NBBW at the airport (buzzing off to Phila to watch the Queens with sister), I stopped in at Lowes to get some paint. I had earlier scraped off some samples into an envelope - I showed these to the Paint Dept. Associate, and he quickly put them into the Color Analyzer, which in a minute or so coughed up the formula that he fed into the Pigment-Squirting-Device. In minutes I had my quart, but first the fine fellow opened it back up, put a spot onto the top of the can, and a spot onto my paint sample. He then used a hair-dryer on both, showing me how the paint dried on my sample looked mostly identical to the specimen I had brought in. Also, the paint on the can didn't get all over everthing else in the shuffle (like it did when I bought some at the H.D. a week ago). I'm not a online survey type but did fill it out and gave them kudos on the hair-dryer-ing.

After the last hour on hands-knees, the painting is done and looks fab.

NBBW is doing the Berlin Marathon in September, so I've started back up the Pimsleurs, and that's why the Deutsch at the beginning of this post.

  3. The jalapeño and I were at the Timberwolves game tonight, but by halftime he was too tired to stay any longer. (This came as a shock to me given how much he loves sports and how energetic he is in general.) Looks like we missed a very exciting second half!

There were a bunch of Raptors fans at the game, including a guy sitting next to me, who had come down from Winnipeg. He was quite vocal with his cheering, but when I told him we were heading out, he shook my hand, wished us well, and concluded with "eh?" I love Canadians.

    1. Holy moly, I never would have guessed the game would end with a Timberwolves win! I'm sad I didn't get to see the comeback in person, but avoiding a complete and total 7-year-old meltdown was probably the right choice.

    2. Despite the Raptors only coming over a year, I've managed to see them in person twice the last few seasons. Their fans definitely travel well and are hilariously well-behaved.

    3. That sounds aboot like every Canadian I've ever met. (my grandpa came to Wisconsin from Quebec, though, so I might be biased.)

I was really sick yesterday, so I missed all of this one. I'm super bummed because I found out watching highlights this morning that they were wearing the greatest uniforms in wolves (NBA?) history. Of course, with Butler out, watching Wiggins jack up shot after shot while Towns only took 7 probably would have annoyed me anyway.
