  1. I get insomnia a lot. Not that I can't get to sleep, but that I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. This morning, it was 3:30 ET, which is 2:30 back home. Yesterday it was 4:30 ET. I'm on a run of about ten to fifteen days of this. Really sucks.

    1. The last 2-3 weeks I've also been waking up at night (sometimes more than once) and having a time getting back to sleep again. Once I woke up at 3:30AM and eventually ended up getting up and starting my day. The last couple nights have been better, so I hope it was just a phase.

      1. I don't have insomnia, or anything, but I do have the joys of getting to wake up 2-3 times per night to let my 12-year-old dog outside. Sometimes I wish she wouldn't bark about it and would just crap on the linoleum instead.

    2. I sometimes get up too early, feeling sick+worrying about some work thing that's really out of my control, and then by 6:30 I've thot of some breakthru that changes my entire demeanor. Because caffeine.

    1. Ron Johnson is "special." David Greene is hopeless as an interviewer, however. Me and the Missus just end up yelling at the radio most mornings during his failed attempts to actually manage an interview with a pol. Any pol, left or right (but mostly right).

      1. Yeah, I haven't been a big fan come to think of it. He also has this annoying habit of starting a question about 2-3 octaves above his regular speaking voice. Almost a squeak.

        1. Without a doubt Steve Inskeep would have handled it way better, but at least Greene pretty much said exactly what I was saying out loud in my car.

          1. I was wondering if I'd somehow left my radio tuned to 1130 following the AFC Championship game last weekend.

    2. Quick follow-up: Rachel Martin interviewed a conservative pundit this morning who basically said Ron Johnson is a complete idiot with zero credibility.

      1. Spoiler SelectShow

Apologies to all for failing to spoiler teh Forbidden Zone comments initially. The Padre has rightly chastened me/us.

        1. Right, throw all sorts of nonsense at the wall and then when inevitably doesn't stick, just throw different nonsense without acknowledging the first batch. Still, saying Johnson has zero credibility is a nice sound byte.

          1. It makes me sad that we've apparently decided we can discuss politics openly here now. I have no ability or desire to tell anyone what to discuss. It just makes me sad, because one of the reasons I come here is to get away from that.

            1. Sorry, I didn't mean for this to go on that direction. My initial comment was meant to be about the style of the interview rather than the content.

              1. And I apologize for raising the partisan flag. I should have spoilered to begin with, or held my tongue.

  2. IT gurus: is there a particular reason why I can't get animated gifs to work consistently within Bookface via Chrome?

    1. My guess is they aren't actually GIFs. It's a very limited format with poor compression so it's common for sites to convert them to videos.

  3. Other subscribers to The Athletic:

Are you specifically following any non-Twins baseball writers in your feed? I’ve opted into content on the Twins (as well as Rockies & Padres), and I’m following the national coverage, which seems to mostly be Ken Rosenthal. If you’re reading anyone else you like, I’d be glad for a recommendation.

    1. I have been very impressed with Katie Strang’s coverage of the Larry Nassar/Michigan State/USA Gymnastics nightmare. Her writing in particular, and the Athletic in general, has covered the story with the depth that I think many other national outlets have been lacking. I hadn’t noticed anything of hers before this specific story, but I plan to continue reading her work in the future.

I’ve also enjoyed some of the long form writing that they put up in their Athletic Ink magazine section. I couldn’t figure out a way to add those to my feed, though.

And I know this will be of no use to you personally, but for anyone with an interest in college football, I’ve been a big fan of Stewart Mandel going way back.

      1. Thanks, Mike. I’ve seen Katie Strang’s name before — I think she writes about the Tigers? I seem to remember a favorable opinion about her baseball coverage.

  4. My brother in Phoenix scrapped one of his Studebaker projects and instead did a hard right turn and made it a pontoon boat. So far, I think he's done a pretty cool job...and it floats!

        1. They almost made a game of it. BJelly made some threes, KAT was good when he got the ball, and Jamal Crawford was Jamaling.

But giving up 24 first quarter fast break points was a bad idea.
