February 28, 2018: Sump Pump Bumps and Thumps

So, we've got a sump pump. Been pretty busy this week. Lately, it'll do its, uh, business, then afterwards there'll be a couple loud noises, like water is slamming back into the system or something. Hoping this isn't a thing...?

  1. Listening to an NPR story about a Supreme Court case on electioneering in Minnesota.

Oy. Can't we have Minnesota Nice at the polls, people?

      1. the one where the guy wearing a Tea Party tee-shirt was twice denied opportunities to vote and came back a third time with his lawyer. Also, about the "ID Me" buttons.

      2. You're thinking of St. Paul mayoral candidate Dai Thao whose criminal charges are still pending afaik.

  2. Just got back from the bank to dispute some fraudulent charges that I noticed last night. Mrs. Twayn, banking dispute resolution specialist, took a look and spotted it as fraud right away. Two small charges to Red Box first to test the card they had made from my skimmed card number. They do this to make sure the card will work but they won't have to deal with a clerk of any kind if it doesn't. Then there was a charge to Culvers and one to a convenience store in the Kansas City area. I turned off the card right away, the wife says the next charges would likely be for iPhones and such. Because the total fraud was just under $50, they're just crediting my account back without an investigation. I'm guessing that my card was skimmed at either a gas pump or the bank's outdoor ATM, and probably the gas pump since those don't have to be chip-enabled until 2020. Let's be careful out there, citizens.

    1. The one time that was done my bank called me before I noticed it, as the person didn't even test out the card before getting a limousine and a whole lotta drinks at a night club in Miami. Bank did the same thing, refunding my money right away and issued me new cards. Hope those folks at least a good time that night.

    2. I had a similar situation. Two small 19 cent withdrawals and then a big one for like $3800. I noticed that right away.

    3. The one and only time I used Red Box, I got some fraudulent charges on my card. I also got the charges refunded and a new card issued. This is why I go over my bank account weekly. Actually, I was doing it before then and was the reason I caught it quickly and probably why the bank responded so well.

      1. If using a credit card, you have a lot of protections for fraud and a decent window to report it. Basically, you're not on the hook for anything so banks respond quickly to not lose money.
