March 31, 2018: Lousy Smarch Baseball

I know they need flexibility for the weather, but is there really a need for a gap in the each of the first three series? You can't just stick that open day at the end of the series?

  1. Is it because people who have tickets to opening day don't want their game moved to the third game of the year?

  2. Home openers have extra festivities and more expensive tickets, so the open day in cold-weather cities is to allow opening day tickets to be pushed back one day. Because otherwise those cheap schlubs that bought game 2 tickets might get all those festivities and opening day/home opener ticket buyers might get pushed back three days and not be the opener.

  3. Around here, it looks like the lousy Smarch weather is going to continue into Smapril.

    1. Last night as I drifted off I thought “ugh, I meant to make a post about lousy Smarch weather.” I don’t know why I was worried.

  4. This is gold.

    1. I sometimes had issues with Gardy the manager, but I've always loved Gardy the character.

  5. I realize it’s the Wolves but they should win 4 of their last 5 giving them 48 wins and a solid 4 seed. A 3 is probably unattainable unless Portland really chokes on the bit.

    1. The Wolves have lost a whole lot of games this year that they should have won. Playing down to their opponents has been a big problem this year.

    1. I like Scott Frost, I root for Nebraska, and I agree with his professed approach.

And I still think it is a really low bar to have to celebrate a football coach for committing to not be verbally abusive.

my college coach, Bob Sullivan, never verbally abused. His mentor, John Gagliardi, one of the winningest coaches ever, never verbally abused (or so I understand). Why have we as a society tolerated for so long -- and, more typically, celebrated -- verbal (and sometimes physical) abuse by leaders toward their charges?

Football is a violent game, but it doesn't require a culture of violence. Football can and should be taught as a game of controlled, tempered aggression. You learn schemes, you read keys, you practice coordination and you take responsibility.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled laments about football and brain injury!!!111one111!!!

      1. One of the winningest coaches? ONE OF!?! Wow, you really know how to pick a fight with a Johnnie!

      2. You're right, it is a low bar. But I still want to do the tiny bit that I can to encourage coaches to clear it.

      3. Living here in Nebraska, I can not and will never cheer for husker football. The obession with husker football is nauseating and goes on 365 days a year and sucks the life out of any other sports.

          FTFY

          1. I must not live in 'Murica, because I'm able to avoid football obsession 98.6 percent of the time. 🙂

      4. For me, football clicked in 8th grade when I learned through experience that applying a good hit is nearly painless compared to taking a hit.

    1. Haha, my bad. There's a little snow in our upcoming forecast, but it won't be shovel worthy.
