2018 Game 3: Twins at Orioles

Okay, how do you do this again? Just put the words in this box thing and press enter? Wait. Is there a button to click or anything? Oh, hell. Don't worry, I'll get the hang of this again eventually. Berrios on the mound today, I'm expecting great things. Play ball!

    1. I'm not sure I've been more excited for an individual player's season than Buxton this summer since Mauer.

  1. I'm having a very bad "being able to watch the game" start to the season. Kind of a bummer since they seem to be liking the whole "put up some runs in the first inning" thing.

  2. Dick (to Bert): Do you have a business card?
    Bert: No. What for?

I believe it’s called a plaque in the Hall of Fame and two World Series rings, Dick.

      1. That conversation (and Bert dropping the card out of the booth onto an unsuspecting O's fan) was perhaps the most enjoyable thing they've done together in several seasons. Then, they've followed it up with two innings of making fun of Araújo's name, ... so back to being awful.

          1. The MLB At Bat app is much closer to being in sync with the TV this year, so even when I'm watching I still listen to Cory and Dan.They're not perfect, but I find them much preferable to Dick and Bert.

      1. 11 more to tie Puckett for first. 95 more hits to tie Carew for second place as a Twin.

        1. Mauer will reach the top of that leaderboard and there will still Stribbers claiming he doesn’t deserve to have his number retired.

    1. It looked like his bat crossed the plate for an instant before snapping back. But, the lack of a side replay angle, i.e. what the ump would have seen, makes it impossible to tell.

  3. Joe Mauer now tied for 178thall time in walks with 891. Tied with Johnny Bench and Andruw Jones.

  4. Good 99% Invisible podcast on Teh Shift, heard it earlier whilst driving.

  5. Dick won’t let the no-hitter go. I agree that Rosario should’be been charged with an error, but it’s annoying that he keeps bringing it up.

    1. It's hilarious to me that he is competely incapable of being on the right side of any bunting debate.

      1. I had the thought on the back of my mind that they might have had him plunk the next guy. (Molitor had an annoyed look on his face) I'm happy that they did not.

        1. Gladden said there are those who would want to do it, but cautioned that it was silly because it wasn’t Jones’s fault. Absolutely true, but refreshing to hear all he same.

Dozier was interviewed after. He said he wasn’t thrilled about it but he expected no retaliation period, because it’s the kind of thing that the offender’s veteran teammates can take care of with a conversation. Again, refreshing.

          1. That's... Way more measured than I would expect or of dazzle. I hope this is a sign that thoughts are changing on this subject.

          2. Conversation?

"I know you aren't a great hitter and we needed baserunners but we prefer you pull a grounder to the 3 players on the right side of the field."

            1. Yeah, the idea that there needs to be a conversation is stupid, but at least it's progress.

                1. Of course, the other thing about that play is that if, say, Aaron Judge had done it, every sports show in the country (and some in other countries) would have told us what a heads-up play it was and how it showed that he's so competitive that he never gives up, no matter what the score is.

                    1. Pretty much. I don't know of any reason to dislike Judge as a person, but the media hype is pretty much the same.

    1. “Some of those unwritten rules of the game are not black and white,” Molitor said. “He did what he thought was right. I think there were a few people who took exception to that. I won’t mention names.”

    1. Yes, it was in the strike zone, but he missed his spot trying for the outside corner and it went to the inside corner instead, so not at all uncommon for umps not to call it.

      1. You're right, it's not uncommon, but it's a poor excuse. The umpire is supposed to make his decision based on where the ball is, not where the catcher's mitt is.

    1. I'm really looking forward to the start of the regular season against MLB batters!

      1. Don't forget the bunt single and the walk on a full count that could have easily been called a strike and then a single up the middle to Machado, who was seeing Berrios for the 4th time.

  6. Twins pitching allowed only 5 runs in 28 innings, starters going 21 without allowing a run.

    1. Bert kept calling for that breaking ball down and away but Berrios threw three fastballs before he finally drove the last nail with that slider.

      1. He did throw one breaking ball with 2 strikes but left it up and over the plate. Bert started to say, "There it is!" before Jones fouled it off.

  7. What an impressive game. I'm sorta glad there was a legit hit on the books because if it had ended as a one* hitter that would have been pretty painful. as it stands, a 3 hitter, CG shutout on a 105 (?) pitches a pretty awesome.

*that gift double was certainly a fielding error.

    1. I agree it probably should have been caught, but I can't imagine that ever being ruled an error in any of the ballparks. It is extremely rare for outfielders to get catching errors on balls that aren't completely in the glove before popping out. If anything, it was barely touched by the tip of Rosario's glove while he's running back to the wall with the ball over his head.

    1. Wiggins has 7 of the first 9 points. Other 2 by Tyus. I miss Ricky, but that has nothing to do with the first two observations..
