Minor Details: Games of April 5

Opening day for three of the four full-season teams.  A big day for Nick Gordon isn't enough for the Lookouts.  Phil Hughes has a mixed bag in his first start for the Miracle.  Shane Carrier drives in both runs as four pitchers combine for a shutout for the Kernels.

BIRMINGHAM 5, CHATTANOOGA 4 IN CHATTANOOGA

The Lookouts led 4-3 after five, but Seby Zavala doubled home a run in the seventh to tie it and Jameson Fisher doubled home a run in the eighth to win it for the Barons.  Todd Van Steensel allowed the tying and losing runs.

Nick Gordon had a big opening day, going 4-for-5 with a triple, scoring once, and driving in one.  Ryan Walker was 3-for-4 with a double and a home run, scoring twice.  Chris Paul was 2-for-4 with a double.  Zack Littell struck out seven in 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.  Williams Ramirez struck out four in 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up a walk.

FORT MYERS 4, CHARLOTTE 3 IN FORT MYERS

All the runs were scored in the fourth and fifth.  The Stone Crabs led 3-2, but Mitchell Kranson doubled home two in the bottom of the fifth to give the Miracle the lead to win.

Kranson was 2-for-4.  Caleb Hamilton was also 2-for-4.  Lewin Diaz was 1-for-4 but drove in two runs.  Phil Hughes, making a rehab start, struck out five in five innings but gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk.  Anthony Marzi struck out four in three shutout innings of relief, giving up three hits and a walk.  Sean Poppen struck out two in a scoreless inning to get the save.

CEDAR RAPIDS 2, QUAD CITIES 0 IN QUAD CITIES

The Kernels scored without a hit in the first and Shane Carrier homered in the fourth.  Bryan Sammons and three relievers took it from there, shutting out the River Bandits.

Carrier was 2-for-3 and drove in both runs, the first coming on a sacrifice fly.  Andrew Bechtold was 2-for-2 with a double.  Sammons struck out six in four innings, giving up three hits and no walks.  Jovani Moran pitched the fifth, walking three but also striking out three.  Jared Finkel struck out three, giving up three hits and a walk.  Ryan Mason pitched a perfect ninth to get the save.

  1. The Rochester and Chattanooga games have also been postponed. The only Twins minor league game going is Fort Myers hosting Charlotte.
