April 8, 2018: The The The Wild And The Jetssssssss

The Wild take control in the 2nd period in their last regular season game against the Sharks. Staal ties Gaborik for the franchise record in goals with an empty netter in the last moments. All is decided, and the Wild will face the Jets in the playoffs.

I still can't figure out who or what this team is, but I'll be watching and cheering them on in the playoffs.

    1. My daughter just asked if I watch wrestling. I haven't in years, but maybe I'll have to start watching with the kids. Might be fun to make it a family thing.

  1. I forgot to mention it Friday, but I wanted to answer a question Twayn had: the instant pot can make red beans and rice.

Also, I'm making hard boiled eggs in it this morning (for a belated egg coloring), so we'll see how that goes. The procedure seems much simpler than stove top and I'm promised shells that will come right off.

      1. So far I'm happy with the reduced amount of time compared to stove top. If they are easy to peel then, even ignoring all the great things I've done with it so far, the instant pot will have been worth every penny.

        1. I have done the Jacques Pepin stovetop method for years. My wife thinks I am a dork for using a pin to punch a hole in the air chamber end of eggs before boiling, but it works very well. (I suspect that ANY cooking technique that does not involve peeling as soon as they are cooled will lead to difficult peeling, but have not tested thoroughly).

anyway, I just did 4 eggs in the Instant Pot -- 5 minutes on high pressure, 5 minutes natural release, then quick release and drop into ice water bath. About to test one.... Perfectly cooked with extra-large eggs.

the time difference is negligible from the Pepin technique (place in boiling water, reduce to low simmer for 10 minutes -- actually, 11.5-12 minutes in practice; 10 is too short).

          1. I just peeled one and the shell came right off with no trouble. The yolk looked a hair over-cooked for my tastes (I did the same timing as yours, but for large eggs) so I'd probably play around with the timing in the future. But still, that shell came straight off, which was exciting.

        2. When using the stovetop method to boil eggs, first dissolve a teaspoon or two of baking soda in the water. This will make the shells slide right off the egg, even when the eggs are very fresh.

  2. I'm also making beer for the first time in a few months. I remember a time when I was willing to freeze my ass off in February...

    1. Making a peanut butter stout at my earliest convenience, which would be today if Wrestlemania wasn’t seven hours long. The last batch was a disaster. I misread a label and used malts that had been expired for three years. It’s a guaranteed drain pour that I haven’t had the heart to drain yet. Heartbreaker.

      1. Was that malt extract or grain and have you tried it yet? It may be ok-ish as long as the malt wasn't, like, rotting.

        1. I’ve tried it, and it was pretty iffy. I’m going to break open another and take shot soon before I decide to drain it all.

          1. If it's just iffy, I'd maybe give it one month unless you need the bottles. The off flavors may subside over time.

  3. Boo. Cancel the game log.

    1. Yeah, I just posted a postponed game log. Radar doesn't show snowfall starting until 4:00 pm or so. Lame. Very, very lame.

      1. Only if you can completely finish in under three hours to not have everyone leave in terrible conditions.

        1. Current forecast says 70% chance of snow, accumulation of less than one inch. Somebody just wanted to watch the Masters.

              1. Another thing the postponement does is push back the need for a fifth starter for a couple more days.

    2. Trueblood bought seats behind home plate off stub hub for some crazy low price, banking on the game getting postponed. Sheer genius.

  4. Moral question: you carpool with a close friend to a conference that's a 5-hour drive each way. Said friend does all the driving there and back. Said friend gets pulled over for speeding as you're driving back on Saturday night (because Wisconsin cops...) and gets a ticket. Do you offer to split the $125 fine? Or is it all on him?

    1. I think you're on the hook to split gas, but you didn't sign up for a speeding ticket.

      1. Yup. This one seems pretty cut and dried unless you told your friend they had to drive fast the whole way.

    2. What these fellas said. If the coworker was driving to the conference alone the ticket would stall be all his fault. Just because you were in the car doesn’t mean you have the ability to adjust the speed he drives at.

  5. Orthodox Easter means lamb in this family. Typically we go to my mother-in-law's, but this year we're at home, as Mrs. Hayes has been struggling with a Crohn's flare and my mother-in-law is preparing to move to just outside the People's Republic. I offered to provide the customary feast. The guest of honor is currently brining in the fridge — salt, a little sugar, and a ton of garlic. I just roasted two heads of garlic for the garlic, lemon, & parsley paste that will get rubbed in before searing & roasting. Mrs. Hayes is preparing Greek roasted potatoes & some fresh beans. I predict the house will smell nice in a few hours.

      1. Lamb’s in the oven, house is starting to stink nice. I had to make room in the fridge for a big bottle of Maudite for the meal, so now I’m polishing off a bottle of buckwheat mead.

        1. Mmmm, Maudite. My first Belgian style ale. I must admit I've rather neglected the Unibroue lineup over the past decade.

            1. Yeah, this. I've become a hop head, and have been pretty much IPA (+) only for a long time until I remember that the belgium folks know what they're doing ...

    1. I’m currently sitting outside in my flip flops watching the temp on my smoker. Tonight we’re habing smoked salmon three ways —-> straight up on top of salad, whipped into a faux pate, and baked into pies. (Admittedly, the third is going to be a game time decision). Before y’all go nuts, it’s really, really legitimately kind of chilly at 53 degrees. Okay, yeah,I’m just trolling you guys.

        1. We’ll be in the 90’s tomorrow (or is it 90s?). I think spring may be over for us already.

      1. v. nice. Although I admit that I have a soft spot for Fasolakia, rather than just (relatively) plain ol' green beans (which I also love).

    1. 1 hit in 7 IP with 12 Ks was the final line. According to Tim Brown, the Twins weren't even a finalist for Otani. Didn't they have the most money to offer or tied for the most? I'm not allowed to cheer for the Angels (other than Trey's Little League team) because Mrs. SoCal is from the Seattle area. But it doesn't really matter because I can't stand Angels fans anyways, especially the ones who jumped ship on the Dodgers in '02 and were suddenly "long-suffering" Angels fans.

  6. If only he could shoot 3s, then he could be a good NBA player, or so Thibs would seem to think.
