  1. Tower of London, a bit of open-top double decker bus, the St Paul's Cathedral (250 + 120 + 150 steps to the top of the dome), and now lunch. Off to Churchill's war room next.

    1. I did a summer semester there during law school. His war room and really the entire Whitehall/Westminster/City of London were experiences on par with my better naval deployments (Caribbean, Panama, S. America - Pacific side). Enjoy!

      1. The war room is an easy 2hr rabbit hole - very clever use of multimedia.

We also attended a wonderful Evensong choral service at Westminster Abbey.

  2. I can’t get myself to want to go to sleep. I putz around until 2 or later, and still wake up at 7 or 8 anyway. I haven’t slept more than six hours in probably over a month, and I’m running ragged. Every morning I say tonight it’ll be different.

    1. I was that way when I was single, and I imagine I might get that way again when the kids are more independent with their mornings.

    2. I have found that reading (kindle app on phone) in bed helps me decompress and I can fall asleep at 10 or 11, versus staying up til 1 or 2 like I used to.

      1. I used to have trouble falling asleep. I now have a routine. I read fiction until my eyelids get heavy then listen to headphones until I drift off.

    3. Acording to my fitbit, here are my average sleep per night over the last several weeks:

      5:46
      5:43
      5:42
      5:23
      5:36
      5:24
      6:16
      5:13
My problem is waking up extremely early. Sometimes, I can get back to sleep, but many times, not. Last night, I got 5:30, but it was in two chunks: 3:19, awake 2 hours, then 2:11. I'm totally exhausted all the time.

      1. You and I are on the same schedule, boss. I’ve been getting up at 330 for the last several weeks (maybe months) and then back to sleep around 5 til 730. I’m always feeling tired.

      2. Caffeine affects me this way; I get to sleep fine, but if I wake up in the middle of the night, it's hell to pay to fall asleep again. No caffeine after lunch for me.

    4. I generally get about six hours of sleep a night. Every few weeks I'll have a night where I get nine or so, just to get caught up

    5. How much exercise do you get? When you're "putzing around" are you on your phone or a screen device of some kind. I've read that, that can over stimulate the brain and make it hard to get to sleep. Of course, I've gotten in the habit of falling asleep in front of the TV. I usually get 6 to 6.5 hours of sleep, but my work is project based and always on a deadline and I work when it is available, so I never have a set bedtime. I went to bed at 8 a.m. this morning and got up at 1 p.m. so I could go to Junior's baseball game.

    1. To be fair, that's only the second worst thing that's come out about their treatment of their cheerleaders this week.

      1. The neighbors down the street have had their daughter participate in some sort of Vikings cheerleader event for little kids. They tried to get my daughter to participate. My daughter didn't want to and if it had come to it, I wouldn't have let her.

        1. I'm pretty sure my daughter is going to end up in cheerleading when she gets to high school. While not as bad, I'd prefer if she didn't even do it there. But yeah, totally agree on those pro cheerleading camps, especially NFL ones.

          1. My daughter liked all sorts of "girly" things prior to about 2nd or 3rd grade. There was no danger of her being interested in cheerleading by junior or senior high. You never know what you are gonna get.

            1. That's a good point. She has been watching Bring it On a lot lately, though.

  3. Jamal Crawford is trying to help save Thibs from himself. (it won't work, but at least someone is trying)

    1. More money for #25!!

    1. I think the MoE around these measures probably means said player has been the 1st or 2nd best position player on the Twins this season. (Or even 3rd... Fangraphs likes E.E. a lot more than B-Ref.)
Bring in pitchers and we can say that said player is in the top 5 by whoever values them. (Fangraphs has a pitcher in first.)

Still, good data to counteract the naysayers.

      1. Yeah, that's a good point. I still don't really know how to quantify the difference between a 1.1 fWAR pitcher and a 0.9 fWAR hitter. Like, in 2009, a bunch of people were saying that Greinke should've been MVP, but that just seems so...wrong. It's kind of a counting stat, but it's still judging the merits of Apples vs. Oranges.

I would, to this point in the season, say that Joe has contributed more to the team than Berrios has.

      2. we're talking about teh $23 millionaire, and you're suggesting the "naysayers" care about data. doh-kay.*

*This is a local sports talk radio expression that y'all may or may not be familiar with. Unrelated to the discussion at hand, I am a little concerned that a Repository search for this results in an auto correction to 'donkey' ... followed by suggested pages which include

among other, less lascivious results. I am not surprised that they exist ... just ... I don't know ... I guess I am surprised.

the only "data" the naysayers care about are teh Dongers and teh Ribeyes. And teh $$$$ paid (while ignoring the $150m or so excess WAR he produced over salary prior to the Big Contract).

  4. I'd belatedly like to thank Rhubarb Runner for taking a break from his Eurotrip to help me ID a Lepidopteran on fb.

    1. And thanks for your correction to my wife's uncle on the hawk! He's a former pilot and outdoorsman. I swear he's an expert on everything and has been everywhere.

          1. The Australian species of crane got to keep its local name, "Brolga".
And the Sarus Crane kindof got to keep its.

    1. Ahh, I loved Ichiro. I learned a lot about him from this book I got once. Can't remember where that book came from though... 🤔
