Minor Details: Games of July 29

Stephen Gonsalves may have found his control.  A good day for Zander Wiel.  Ernie De La Trinidad leads the Miracle to a win.  No offense for the Kernels.  Chris Williams hits his league-leading eleventh homer in an E-Twins loss.

LOUISVILLE 3, ROCHESTER 2 IN LOUISVILLE (10 INNINGS)

Each team scored two in the third and nothing else until the tenth.  Two strikeouts killed the Red Wings chances in the top of the tenth.  In the bottom of the tenth, a walk and a bunt put men on second and third and Blake Trahan singled home the deciding run.

Rochester had just three hits.  Taylor Motter was 1-for-4 with a two-run homer (his third) to provide both Red Wings runs.

Stephen Gonsalves struck out six in six innings, giving up two runs on four hits and a walk.  He has only walked one in his last two starts (thirteen innings).  Addison Reed pitched a scoreless inning, walking two and striking out one.  John Curtiss struck out three in two shutout innings, giving up a walk.

TENNESSEE 8, CHATTANOOGA 3 IN TENNESSEE

The Smokies scored two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh to build a 7-0 lead.

Zander Wiel was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk, scoring twice.  He is batting .312.  Brent Rooker was 2-for-4 with a walk.  Luis Arraez was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Omar Bencomo struck out five in 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks.

FORT MYERS 8, DAYTONA 6 IN DAYTONA

The Miracle trailed 1-0, led 4-1, and trailed 6-4 before a three-run seventh put them ahead to stay.  Travis Blankenhorn doubled home the tying run and the lead run scored on a wild pitch.

Ernie De La Trinidad was 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and a walk, scoring twice.  He is batting .571.  Blankenhorn was 2-for-4 with a triple in addition to the double and drove in two.  Alex Kirilloff was 2-for-5 with a double and two runs.  He is batting .381.  Royce Lewis was 2-for-5 with two runs and is batting .302.

Bryan Sammons struck out four in four innings but allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits and five walks.  Clark Beeker pitched four shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three.

QUAD CITIES 6, CEDAR RAPIDS 0 IN CEDAR RAPIDS

The River Bandits scored four in the first and cruised to a win.  The Kernels had just two hits.

Robby Rinn was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .306.

Jordan Balazovic struck out seven in six innings but allowed five runs on nine hits and no walks.  Melvi Acosta struck out four in three shutout innings, giving up one run on four hits.  His ERA is 2.70.

BRISTOL 7, ELIZABETHTON 4 IN ELIZABETHTON (8-PLUS INNINGS--RAIN)

The Twins scored two in the first, but the Pirates scored two in the second and two more in the third and led the rest of the way.  Dean Lockery's two-run homer gave Bristol the lead.

Chris Williams was 2-for-4 with two home runs (his tenth and eleventh) and three RBIs.  His eleven home runs lead the league by two and his 36 RBIs are tied for first.  Michael Helman was 1-for-3 with a home run (his second) and a walk and is batting .405.  DaShawn Keirsey was 1-for-4 with a double and is batting .333.  Jared Akins was 0-for-4 and is batting .333.  Alex Robles was 0-for-3 with a walk and is batting .320.  Trevor Casanova was 1-for-3 with a walk and is batting .300.

Brian Rapp struck out five in four innings but allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits.  His ERA is 3.74.  Moises Gomez pitched a scoreless inning, giving up one hit.

  1. I'm glad the Gonsalves run continues.

    Also, there was a family in my hometown with the last name Vanderziel, which I always think of when I see Zander Wiel.
