August 15, 2018: Light Housecleaning

Out of curiosity, can you even call winning both games of a 2 game series a "sweep"? Shouldn't it be called a "dusting" or getting "swiffted" or something?

  1. Minnesota had its highest voter turnout for a midterm primary election in 48 years with more than 867,000 ballots cast. Democratic voters outnumbered Republican voters by almost two to one. The next few months are going to be really interesting.

    1. Tim Pawlenty and I voted in the same precinct. We also both will not be governor after the next election.

I knew where he lived when he was governor -- not that far from us. I didn't realize he was claiming residence in our precinct still.

    1. Man, blue kitty is also 15 ish, but the kidney failure is getting the best of her. We have to make a tough decision pretty soon.

      1. We’ve started having those conversations about one of our dogs, too. Arthritis. She is 17, so I’m amazed she’s made it this long in the first place.

  2. Following up with Philo on where the word got out on the good birds in his in-laws' flooded fields...
I don't know. I checked all of my sources.

    1. I wonder if it wasn't a private conversation on facebook between birders who both belong to one of those groups.

  3. Joe West has now umpired 5,164 Major League Baseball games, the second most in history. I wonder how many of these featured a Ron Gardenhire ejection?

        1. That was Hunter Wendelstedt, but an absolute classic. I also loved, “I’m not arguing balls and strikes, I’m arguing you guys suck.”

  4. On the stovetop tonight - potsticker stirfry - or as dr. chop wants me to call it - potstickers with veg. (He dad made "stir fry" that was under cooked veg with no sauce and a protein served over rice, ruined the style for her...) we used a bag of trader joes pork potstickers, a red pepper, a poblano (which was s-m-o-k-i-n-g hot), a bunch of baby bok choi, an onion, 2 cloves garlic, a dash of minced ginger, and some fried shallots. Fried the shallots and removed from pan, fried and finished the pot stickers, removed from pan, used same pan for veg. Added ginger and garlic when the onion was done. Made a simple sauce of 2 parts soy, 2 parts sriracha, 1/2 part sesame oil, 1 part honey, 1 part rice vinegar. Dumped the sauce in the pan to finish / deglaze the bottom, returned the pot stickers, stir to coat, garnish with fried shallot and some fresh green onion parts. de-lish.

    1. We just got a few red peppers in the CSA today. Might have to try this.

We've been sharing the CSA with some friends. We do every other week. One problem is that we've realized that the CSA isn't set up to do that. They've been giving us cabbage every other week. In other words, we get cabbage every single time! We had 3 types of cabbage in the fridge last week.

      1. slaw?

Cabbage is a super versatile, but I grow very tired of it easily. We've been doing a tostada thing for a while where we use left over protein (pulled rotisserie chicken, left over pork bits, or whatever is lying around) in a chili / enchilada sauce on top of an oven baked crispy corn tortilla topped with refried black beans, protein, cheese, cabbage and avocado (or avocado cream when we're feeling fancy - avocado blended with sour cream / yogurt, lime juice, cilantro, salt and pepper) Lots of cabbage has met its end that way at our house.

        1. I had to google it, but I wished I hadn't because now I'm hungry and its still 3 hours until lunch.
