  1. I'm the lone Red Sox voter. The older I get the more I root for teams that are clearly the best in the league. I rooted for the 2007 Patriots to go 19-0. I rooted for the 70 win Warriors. And I'll root for the Red Sox, especially if they get to 110 wins. Plus, Mookie Betts is amazing.

I do like a lot of the teams going. Hard to root for the Indians with ownership dragging their racist heels even though that's not the players' faults.

    1. I'm the lone Yankees voter. I went Yankees/Dodgers/Cubs. I want people to see that the way money is spread in baseball is a problem.

      1. I think that anyone who is going to believe this already believes it. I don't think a couple years of the Yankees winning is going to change anyone's mind.

Hell, it was barely a blip in the conversation last year, and the Dodgers payroll is HUGE.

        1. You're probably right as regards the more engaged fan, but I'm of the mind that the casual fan is going to respond to a few years of the Yankees winning in a way they're not responding to the issue now.

          1. The Yankees haven't won it all since 2009. The Dodgers haven't won since 1988. The Royals have been a more recently successful team than the Yankees. No one thinks of the Giants as a "big payroll" team, even though they have the second highest payroll in baseball (they are also not doing very well this year).

I guess I'm not itching to sit through the seven to ten years of big payroll clobbering that it's going to take to move the needle on this conversation.

Yeah... I mean, I'd rather that it weren't an issue at all. To the extent that small market teams can beat these juggernauts, I'm glad to see it happen. But you're usually talking about one or two teams a year, not a real parity. If we can get this problem addressed without actually suffering the effects of competitive imbalance, then that's good.

              1. I wish it didn't involve the whole "tank/rebuild" thing, but a lot of the smaller market teams have gotten really good at it.

Three of the teams in the bottom third in payroll are in the playoffs this year. Including the team that's dead last in payroll. It's kind of cool.

      2. Those teams winning will do nothing to help that along. When they win, their bases count it as proof of their greatness. Someone at WGOM once said he wanted the Yankees to rattle off ten straight World Series wins or so to demonstrate the problem. So apparently all we have to do is watch the team we hate most hijack our sport for a decade in the hopes that MLB would change things - which they wouldn't because the money would be pouring in.

Use Premier League as a barometer. It's a four-to-six-team league, and always has been, and there are no changes on the horizon.

      1. My rule is "number of years since you won it all, unless you're the Yankees or Dodgers". Cleveland and Atlanta sometimes are added to that list. Rockies unfortunately likely to rank highly on that list for many years.

  2. I’ve never looked forward to four hours of conference calls like I do today. It will be nice to have something keeping me from following along with the news in real time. Not sure I could stomach it.

    1. 'Spoiler' SelectShow
    2. I’ve been watching between meetings today. My daughter will ask about this someday, and out of respect for her & Dr. Ford, I feel like I need to witness.

      1. I’ve listened to the whole thing. I’m deeply saddened that the republicans wouldn’t use their own voices to ask their own questions.

  3. For some reason the Twins added some more tickets to my account. I already have a ticket for the remaining games. So if anyone missed my earlier posts, let me know if you want to go to what could be some of Joe's last games. Plus you get a cool stocking hat.

EDIT: my sections are full for Friday night

  4. The Runner Family is spending the night in Alexandria on Saturday night, and plan on having supper at a well known establishment there that evening -- anyone else that might be in the vicinity then?

  5. Our kids have their homecoming/spirit week next week. Pajama day, color day, etc. One of the days is Fake Injury Day.

And I'm all like "You mean like bi-lateral leg weakness?!?!one!"

    1. Bummed to see they played last night.
Now the parks are going to be packed on Sunday afternoon.
I prefer having that time to myself.
