November 2, 2018: Hellscape

I had the football game on last night in the background (mostly out of a morbid curiosity to see worst playing worst) and I'd say 75% of the commercials were political ads. First, so happy pretty much all of my media consumption is streaming, and second, even with minimum exposure, I'll be damn happy when this is over.

  1. I've been getting plenty of steaming political ads. Streaming ones too. They're about 75% for the wrong district, since I'm sort-of near the line.

    1. I don't watch over-the-air TV much, but still 2016 was so much worse. My mail has been bombarded more than anything, and I get Facebook ads and stuff. The content of the ads I've seen seem less mean than I've been used to.

      1. Holy crap am I getting mailers. I got four just yesterday. I mean, I appreciate the effort to get some info out, and I understand because Wisconsin has a number of intense races going on. But man, I've already done my candidate research and my recycling already fills up too fast for an every other week pickup.

        1. Interestingly, 90% of my mailers are for my mother-in-law who lives with us, or her father, who passed away 47 years ago and who has never lived at this address.

              1. Provided the paper comes from recycled material (I would like to see more mailers using paper that’s obviously recycled) or was sustainably harvested, the trees aren’t a huge issue. Bulk mail essentially helped keep my brother from dying of juvenile leukemia, however, so while I wish political donations were put to more effective use, I won’t take for granted the knock-on effects these mailings have on providing postal workers with decent wages and solid benefits for their families.

            1. I've suggested that MN should refashion itself as a battleground state to help our economy with all the out-of-state advertising dollars that could be spent here.

              1. Or get into the ballot proposition game like us out here in Cali. Our mailbox is packed to the rim with mailers every day with flyers, about 75% about propositions instead of candidates. Not watching much network tv means I don't see them all that often, but nearly all the TV (and Spotify!) commercials are for or against propositions.

It's definitely one way to get corporations with a vested interest in the outcomes to spend the big bucks.

                  1. Washington is the same way. It’s annoying. Initiatives have their place, but it should be roughly one every four years, not 3-5 every two years. Don’t get me started on voting for non-binding resolutions on the same ballot with races that actually matter.

                    1. If only we still had only 3-5 every two years. We're at 11 this round, and that's DOWN from 2016, when we had 17. Plus, there were another 5 during the primaries this year. Ridiculous.

          1. or her father, who passed away 47 years ago and who has never lived at this address.

Can’t blame them for trying, I guess — he’d still be a valid voter if your address was in Chicago.

    2. The worst was when I lived in the Sioux City area. Ads from South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa.

  2. Does anyone here listen to Across the Meadow? I just recently discovered it, and am hopeful it might fill the Twins-sized gap in my podcast subscriptions. I wish the hosts would use some different metaphors for interest in players & other folks around the game, but the hosts’ dudebro level doesn’t seem to be insufferable.
