  1. We got very little snow, although we did get a little freezing rain. Very high winds over night (50-60 mph reported) and now the very cold is coming.

  2. A foot of snow right outside the garage door, and about 3 inches in most of the driveway. I was making noise, blowing snow at 530 so my wife could get to work. Surprising in that 45 minutes not a soul was moving outside.

  3. My parents leave today for my brother's in Phoenix -- not a moment too soon. Tue-Thur won't get above -10F back home. Meanwhile I get a full day training in Omaha on the coldest day of the year.

    1. I have a feeling we're going to have a major labor issue in MLB soon. Collusion, service time, minor league salaries...

    2. One of last week’s Effectively Wild episodes featured a lengthy discussion of the Padres supposedly “opening their books” to demonstrate their financial straits. In the conversation, the Padres podcaster Ben & Jeff were interviewing noted that, when ownership changed hands several years ago, they proudly proclaimed they were not taking on any debt. Now the team is crying that a bad financing deal & refi penalties for their heavily subsidized, beautiful ballpark is limiting their ability to add free-agent talent to augment their pool of high-potential young guys.

  4. hard to measure the snow when the wind is blowing sifting the flakes around. But I would say a good 6 to 8 inches at my place. Its soul crushing cold too, and today is the warm day.

      1. Remembering how highly thought of Olt was at one time, my first thought was, "Could this be like Shane Mack, where it just took him longer to figure it out?" Then I realized that Mack was 26 when the Twins got him, and Olt is 30, so probably not.

Looking at Olt's career, he does seem to draw a lot of walks, but that's about his only offensive skill. My big fear about signing guys like this is that, in the past, we've seen too many of them end up getting substantial playing time in the majors.

        1. His career slash line vs the Twins is 385/439/385. So maybe this is preemptive so that Twins' pitchers don't have to face him....

  5. Elder Daughter got back late last night from a weekend in Sedona, but her school is closed today so she caught a break and didn't have to work. I got up this morning and got the driveway cleared off, along with the street from the driveway to the mailbox (our snowplow drivers suck and never get close enough to the curb) and from the other side of the driveway to the neighbor's driveway and just for fun I went ahead and cleared the two-foot pile at the end of their driveway that the plow left. When I came in, one of my fingers and all of my toes had that hard numb feeling, it took about ten minutes to thaw them out good. Later on I'll go out and sweep off the deck and play a little Frisbee with the dog (last chance for a few days). On the vehicle front, I just replaced the battery in the minivan last week and the battery in Younger Daughter's car is only two years old and seems pretty strong, so I feel pretty good there. . Yesterday I gassed up the cars and tossed in a bottle of Iso, topped off all the fluids and aired up the tires. Still, I'm thinking of bringing one of the batteries indoors for the really cold nights, it only takes a minute or two to hook it back up in the morning.

      1. Mid-60s here today. Getting worried that I won't get all my oranges harvested before they start rotting. Some trees are starting to bud already.

  6. Former Twin Dillon Gee is retiring. He finished the 2017 season with the Twins and pitched pretty well as kind of a swingman. He pitched last year in Japan, so the Twins are the final MLB team he pitched for.
