    1. The funny part was Wade didn't even try to sell the ump. He never held it up or anything. He just handed the ball to a kid, thinking it was a foul ball out of play.

  1. According to Chris Jaffe, today I'm exactly as old as John Steinbeck was the day The Grapes of Wrath was published (13,560 days old).

    1. Absolutely. Players have always been underpaid in the first half of their careers but were overpaid in the second half. Now that owners have decided to not overpay in the later years, they need a new CBA.

      1. Did the media blame the players back then? If there's a lockout in 2021, I think the media excoriates the owners this time. If there's a strike instead, I could see it being more split. The media, and this is probably biased by my reading choices, seems pro-labor but I doubt they are firmly "pro". Instead, they're for players to the extent they want to write about baseball and not labor relations.

        1. We here so often how many millions the players are making, it is easy to forget how many billions the owners are making. It is also hard to think about the "underpaid" players when their minimum wage for one year would be a life-changing amount for the majority of Americans, who are still richer than the vast majority of the world. Even so, if there is a labor stoppage, it would be very difficult for me to be on the side of ownership.

    1. He's shown his potential, obviously. He's topped out at "good" the last three seasons, though (and hasn't cracked the Top 30 in MLB in WAR in any of those three seasons).

I'd have preferred Machado if given my choice between the two.

        1. If we're being realistic, it gives the Phillies a better chance to win, and it's not going to *actually* make it so they can't spend money in the future. And...I mean... I'm almost certainly using one of my keeper picks in Half Bakef on him.

I just think that Manny will provide more value over the next ten years.

      1. And, as was brought up in the comments section of the link that HJ just posted, in eight to thirteen years, inflation and increase in win valuation will mean that he'll probably need to be right around a 2-win player to make the deal "worth it".

They're saying that there are no opt outs, which strikes me as completely insane, though he probably traded those for enough money to get over the "record breaking" bump.

  2. First the bad news: My angiogram yesterday revealed a major new blockage. But, because it's in a location (left circumflex artery just beyond the junction with the left main and left anterior descending arteries) it was not a good candidate for angioplasty and stenting. So two weeks from now I'll be having triple coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Having seen this with my father, my uncle, and my brother, I'm none too thrilled with the prospect of what lies ahead.
Now the good news: I'm not quite dead yet.

    1. First of all, best of luck with the surgery. Hang in there, guy.

My father died at 55 with a heart attack (smoker, Agent Orange exposure, basically no cardio, etc.). I'm 57yr+4mo and take drugs for hyperlipidemia (Atorvastatin), and high blood pressure (Olmesartan). I'm a swimmer, runner, and biker/spinner - except for the last 3 weeks with this pneumonia/persistent coughing).

I went to Quest on Tuesday, and am with Dr. Fear tomorrow (annual checkup), we'll see what he says. I'm not quite dead yet.

    2. Twayn,
I know you don't live to far from me. If y'all need any help with anything, like shoveling, springtime yardcare, etc. ... just reach out. I've got two teenagers who are ready and able to help me.
