  1. This is from 2017 Chicago Tribune, but you get the idea

    St. Louis

It might seem a surprise that one of the nation’s biggest Mardi Gras celebrations takes place in this Midwestern city, but it’s a legacy thing, linked to the founding of St, Louis by French fur traders back in 1764. French customs and traditions live on here (the fleur-de-lis serves as the city seal) and the Soulard District is always ready for a Mardi Gras bash come February. There are parades, of course, with the biggie being the Bud Light Grand Parade on Feb. 25, but a long list of fun events takes place in the weeks leading up to Fat Tuesday. Among them is the Beggin’ Barkus Pet Parade (North America’s largest animal parade), a softball tournament, a 5K run, a wine and beer tasting, and a variety of culinary events including a Cajun cook-off.

    1. a wine and beer tasting

I’m pretty sure there’ll be more than just a tasting here in New Orleans.

    1. I have to hand it to my wife, who diligently read to both our kids every night when they were young. Both grew up to be very intelligent people, and when people ask me why they both had so much academic success, I point at my wife and tell the story of her never missing a night of reading to them as babies and reading with them as children.

    2. HPR has been read to less by me than the others, as his age at the best part to start the habit was when I needed to put his younger sisters to bed.
Good think his homeschooling mom read a bunch to him.

Got into a spat with LBR last night, when she didn't want a new chapter book (The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald) to be her bedtime story (which AJR also gets to hear), but she also didn't want that to be AJR's new book (having just finished Padraic Colum's translation of The Children of Odin). I told her that her mom wasn't going to read the book and that I read books at bedtime, so either I would read it to her (and AJR) as a bedtime story, or I would read it to AJR.
LBR still likes picture books. I told her that when there were new picture books from the library, we could skip a night. That mostly settled it, but it'll cause friction from here to its end.

    3. I routinely feel like I have no idea what I'm doing as a parent, but I have always felt like if nothing else, I can share books with my boys and hope it makes up for everything else.

  2. For all the half bakef league participants, the league page has been updated with the eligible keepers. Also, let me know when you would prefer to have the draft.

    1. I understand the need to limit expanding rosters in September but 28 seems extreme. It means only 2 players and only 1 of them a pitcher can be added. Might as well not even expand the rosters then. I think 30 would make more sense.

      1. I really don't understand why there was this sudden need to change the roster expansion rule, which had been in place for over fifty years, but I guess that's just me.

        1. well, I can see roster sizes being all over the place due to minor league post season, etc, which could have more players on one team than another, but even if you had a limited roster expansion and the player(s) you want to call up are in minor league post season, doesn't the same situation occur?

          1. And "more players on one team than another" is the result of choices teams make. No one's forcing a team to go with fewer players--they choose to do that. I mean, I'm not outrageously outraged about it or anything. It just seems like a solution in search of a problem.

  3. The more I read about the Twins' new coaching staff and their new approach to analytics, the more excited I get. This is a new day and age for the Twins.
