2019 Game 21: Twins at Astros

Twins up against the Astros again after a nice mashing last night. Michael Pineda up for the Twins and he has done as well as expected through four games with a 2-1 record and almost a SO per inning. Also at 6’7”, 265 lbs, I wonder if he had been born in the United States if Pineda would have played football or basketball, the dude is huge. Wade Miley on the mound for the Astros and if you’ve been forgoing anything in a Lent-like fashion until the Twins faced a lefty starter, well today is the day you can finally partake. Congratulations on getting this far with that. Miley has been serviceable but doesn’t throw a ton of strikeouts. He has held opponents to 3 earned runs or less for 20 straight starts, so he’s got that going for him. Which is nice.

Important game for the Twins to win as Verlander up for the ‘Stros tomorrow. Be nice to get a win tonight and not have to worry about Wednesday’s game. First pitch at 7:10p.

Twins Line Up:

C Garver
SS Polanco
DH Cruz
LF Rosario
1B Cron
3B Gonzalez
2B Schoop
RF Kepler
CF Buxton

    1. Hey, Geoff! Catcher was my primary position. I hope your son has as much fun as I did behind the plate. One of my oldest cousins handed down my first mitt, which I still have. (That reminds me — it needs to be re-laced.) Many happy memories wearing the tools of ignorance.

      1. He is big for his age and he is pretty mild mannered so if he takes to it I think he could do well. I need to get him a catchers mitt.

  1. I apparently had some kind of dream that Angel Hernandez was out of the league. I know it’s damned near impossible for an umpire to lose a job, but I possibly would have put down money that he did. I also had a dream once that I went fishing to try to catch retired Samoan pro wrestler Rikishi, so maybe don’t listen to me.

  2. Corey Koskie had a meeting with my wife’s company today. He’s starting a company to better educate sports parents. Everyone said he was a really nice guy (shocking, I know). Apparently he’ll be signing some stuff for me next time he drops by.

  3. Not that Atteberry is wrong, but it annoys me that you have to "scout the umpire". The strike zone isn't supposed to change according to the umpire's whim. In other words, Robo Umps Now!

    1. I wonder if it was a point of emphasis this year because, strictly by the eye test, I've felt like the strike zones haven't been too bad to start the season. (uh, angel hernandez tonight excepted. It's been so bad already.)

      1. In 2008, the first year imps were analyzed for this, they missed 16% of ball / strike calls. Now they're down to 9% missed calls.

    2. Not that I’m listening to the radio guys right now, but Atteberry’s observation seems to be reacting to the reality of baseball at worst (and a subtle jab at Angel at best).

      But yes, robot umps now.

  4. So I was keeping track of the game on ESPN gameday. We are up 3-1 and our win probability just dropped to 40.3%.

      1. Not sure if it’s changed, but the MLB.com power rankings have had the Twins at 15th every time I’ve looked, regardless of the success the previous week. They’re just so sure this is smoke and mirrors.

  5. I look at Springer with his tall socks and dirt all over his uni and can’t help liking him.

  6. It does appear Dick's audio is a split second of the video. I don't think it's him being preemptive.

  7. Have to say, some nice ‘at-the-wall’ defense by Brantley (and Reddick earlier) keeping things close.

      1. I'm working on my comments for a symposium this weekend with the game in the background. I'm starting to get the feeling like I might not need to divert my attention further.
