  1. The What We Do in the Shadows TV series has been inconsistent, but the vampires/werewolves rumble had some belly laughs, as did the energy vampire vs. the emotional vampire standoff.

    1. I had to look it up... saw a New Zealish name that looked familiar... Taika Waititi.
The same guy that wrote/directed Eagle vs Shark, which I watched last week. (New to Netflix).
I guess the bigger name is Jemaine Clement, but I've only seen about one episode of Conchords.

  2. Fortune has smiled on us, and Philosofette and I find ourselves with a free Saturday evening, babysitters, and just enough available tickets (now purchased), such that we're going to be able to see Avengers opening weekend.

We used to get out to opening weekend screenings all the time, but it hasn't happened since Jurassic World (and that was an unusual exception, since it was the 1 year anniversary of my sister's death, and she loved Jurassic Park, so the extended family made an event of it), and before that... probably since before Aquinas was born. So... a decade.

    I'm unreasonably excited.

      1. If it's not a grandparent, I have no clue. I can't find any kids interested in money and/or giving up free time.

    1. 3 hours of Avengers!

I'm taking the whole family. The only way to work for everyone was 10am on Sunday.

    2. Have to admit that we are not up to speed on the Marvel movies, even though we have a niece who works on some of them as a set decorator. She started out on Iron Man and has been doing them ever since. The very first movie she worked on was The Hangover.

      1. There are youtube videos that review the whole thing in 5 minutes. I'll need a refresher.

  3. Just listened to Rocco on MLB Radio. Lengthy interview. Very refreshing to hear him talk intelligently about baseball without just throwing out the same old cliches. I like this guy.

  4. Oh boy, I brought home a stray cat back in December, and now my mother-in-law has found another kitten under her house that we've agreed to take. If the current cat gets along with the kittens, we're one cat from becoming crazy cat people.

    1. We are also adopting a kitten. Our older cat is a bit crazy and mean to everyone but the immediate family. We will see how this goes.

    2. We've had our cat for a few years now, got her as a tiny kitten with a nasty cold (she would sneeze kitty snot all over us). She came from a barn cat litter and was originally fostered by a woman with a Great Dane, so she had no fear of our dog from the get go and she's got a wild streak in her that I absolutely adore and admire. She was also weaned too early and from the time we brought her home she adopted my bathrobe as her surrogate mother. I'll throw it on the bed and she'll jump up, nuzzle up to a seam and start nursing it like it's her momma until she falls asleep. If that's not cute I don't know what is.

    3. We’re going to foster a cat for a friend while she’s on sabbatical next semester. Trial run at having a pet again.

    4. As long as the Cat:Human ratio stays at 1:1 or below, I believe you pass under the threshold for Crazy Cat Household status.

For several years we were at 3:2, with one cat who displayed a host of behavioral & mental problems that suggested senility — except the vet assured us that feline senility isn’t a thing. We moved up to 3:3 for a while, and now are at 2:3. One cat is pretty high-functioning, with dog-like characteristics, while the other’s an incredibly affectionate, happy-go-lucky goofball.

        1. I don't think outside cats count. Crazy cat people might also have outside cats, but the inside cats are essentially required at the same > 1:1 ratio, regardless of outside cat numbers. Or maybe we'd give them some slight credit, such that 1 outside cat = .1 inside cats, or somesuch?

      1. This was definitely not a planned thing, so there's isn't much risk of that ratio getting out of hand. I figure it's better to make the sacrifice and take in one more cat than to let it roam wildly. Hopefully Dax takes kindly to him since this one is 2 or 3 weeks old. It only took him a couple days to get used to our dog, so I'm confident.

  5. Looks like we'll be spending the weekend in the NJ/Phil. area; we heard this morning that one of Mrs. Runner's brothers died overnight. This after my youngest brother's FIL died on Easter.

    1. My condolences to your family. One major downside of getting older is losing loved ones with greater frequency.

      1. That is too true.

He was a retired professor from Rutgers, and his field of study was limnology, which as a kid I would have eaten up. He was involved in a lot of acid rain studies, among other things. I enjoyed the (too few) times we got to visit together.

  6. local boy Brett Graves is in the minors again after spending last season on the Marlins roster; he's started a video blog of sorts -- here's one of his latest:

  7. I was walking through the Pig getting dinner after work and strolled past the clearance booze cart. They were selling Salvator double Bock six packs for 5.99. Don't mind if I do.

    1. Nice! The Ayinger Celebrator is the best of this style that I’ve ever had, but Salvator is very good!
