FMD: 5/3/19 – New Music

I feel like there has been a ton of new music coming my way lately. I see DK has even fortuitously selected for today's video one of the recent highlights I've had. I really appreciate this wave, especially since I'm starting my annual attempt at a summer mix.

I know we've talked new music before, but, hey, it's always a fresh topic by its nature, right?

I'm never quite sure what qualifies as "new" music. There's a lot of music that I've missed, so it's new to me. But sometimes lots of people missed it, and that makes it "new" to them too, and so if I'm starting to share it... does it qualify as new? There's also the other end of the spectrum, where you can pick up a song that has been dropped without an album yet. For example, I was listening to several songs from Alice Merton's Mint long before it was released. At this point, those songs are probably still new, but to me, they're starting to get old.

I always love being on the very front end. The flip side, I always feel a little foolish for being a late-comer.

I'm curious your thoughts on new music, how it makes you feel, how you keep up, etc.

And what new music is out there, or coming out, or maybe just "new to you" that you're looking forward to/enjoying/etc.?

  1. New music is not a topic I can contribute much to, so I'll just give you my list:

    1. Just You N Me--Chicago
    2. Yesterday Once More--The Carpenters
    3. It's Going to Take Some Time--The Carpenters
    4. You Wear It Well--Rod Stewart
    5. More Than a Feeling--Boston
    6. Don't Go Breakin' My Heart--Elton John and Kiki Dee
    7. Train Leaves Here This Morning--Eagles
    8. Part of the Plan--Dan Fogelberg
    9. Inspiration Lady--Gordon Lightfoot
    10. You Take My Breath Away--Rex Smith

  2. My new job allows me to listen to music at my desk a lot more than the old one did (it's amazing what that does for my work ethic, as well as my attention span). That, combined with Spotify should mean that I'm able to keep up with newer music more than I have in years, but I really haven't so far. Nothing has really caught my ear yet this year, other than Yugen Blakrok's album, which reminds me a fair bit of Lauren Hill's flow, if Lauren Hill dropped the soul aspect of her music entirely, and instead, rapped about mysticism over really dark, atmospheric beats.

    1. One thing that I've found is services like Spotify and Pandora really seem to redirect me to music I've heard before. Al Gore's rhythms seem to discourage branching out too far.

      1. Let me add: this is one of the reasons I'm always unsure of how new the stuff I'm finding is... it usually takes effort on my part to find new music, and so I'm not sure if it's new new, or just new to me. And looking that stuff up is annoying.

      2. There is a big difference between new music and new-to-me music. Pandora is great for the latter, but unfortunately the new tracks I hear during my infrequent driving are disappointingly a year or two old, and barely a handful (that I like enough to look into) are actually new.

  3. While I enjoy being on the cutting edge of the new, I've got no problems going back and spending time with what I missed. I wouldn't want to limit myself.

    1. Oh yeah, I don't mean to suggest that they should be exclusive. I spend a lot of time with music I never heard the first time through - I just started a Nick Lowe Pandora station a few weeks back, for example - I just also like the cutting edge too.

  4. Better Oblivion Community Center, which is the Pheobe Bridgers/Conor Oberst deal is pretty good album and I think would fit with many Citizen's musical tastes.

    1. I've liked the 2 songs I've heard.

I'm planning on getting the new Isbell-produced Josh Ritter album. I have tickets to see him at the zoo in August.

      1. Recommendations from that album? I've heard a couple and... they've not impressed me nearly as much as his last album. (It might be the Isbell... I get it, the guy is brilliant and legitimately thoughtful in a world that too often lacks thought... but... I want more hooks than I usually get from his sound? Something like that?).

        1. I've only listened to it twice on NPR.com and my opinion has matched yours. I didn't get his last album (heard it was bad). I really liked the previous one but it took awhile for it to grow on me. Hoping for the same with this one.

          1. Ah, I see now I meant his one before the previous one too. Sermon on the Rocks. That one I like.
