June 5, 2019: Homer Contest

I wanted to see if people were interested in making the homer prediction contest a daily thing. After all, you guys have spookied a ton of homers this year; let's try to translate that to bragging rights.

I can keep track of stats. But I'm thinking it would go like this:

  1. You can make your prediction at any time prior to the homer happening. In other words, you can make your prediction before game time or during the game if you want to wait until you get that Spooky feeling. Obviously, if you make the prediction before game time, you get more plate appearances for your guess to be correct.
  2. You can predict more than one player will homer, but you only get points if you get all of them correct.
  3. Guess 1 player correct: 1 point
  4. Guess 2 players correct (can be same player): 5 points
  5. Guess 3 players correct (can be combo of same player/different players): 10 points

So far both Twayn and yours truly would have one point under this system.

Season Long Homer Contest?

    1. Man, 8?!?! Seems both so long ago and so recent.

I don't remember really any specifics about the game itself. Just that it was hotter than hell that day, and Sean slept most of the way back to Des Moines

My best shot of the day:

  1. Noticed in standings:
By the traditional calculation, Houston (42-20) is ½ game ahead of the Twins (40-19).
    Show my work:
    (Win Difference - Loss Difference)÷2 =
    [(42-40)-(20-19)]÷2 =
    (2 - 1)÷2 = ½

Yet! The Twins have the higher winning percentage (by 5.5 basis points: .67797 over .67742).

  3. I read the header wrong and just assumed I would win the contest as the board's biggest homer.

I know a lot of you are pretty much into smoking meats. I am pretty fired up about Father's Day coming up. The joint is partnering with a local smoking outfit "Smokin' Brews and Ques". The guy has a large smoker trailer and is showing up around 4 am to get it going. We are tossing some Prime Rib, Bone-In Chicken and Pork Butt on it throughout the day. In the joint, we will have Smoked Prime Rib, Smoked BBQ Chicken and a Smoked Teriyaki Pulled Pork. I look forward to watching and learning. The guy is legit.

        1. When I do ribs, I dry rub first. Then just brush on BBQ sauce shortly before serving. So, for me, "both" is the correct answer.

            1. I can go either direction, but I do like some sauce lightly brushed on so that it caramelizes a bit. Not a fun of heavy saucing.

              1. Last time I did ribs I did one application of sauce for the last bit of smoking and it worked great. It was a home made bourbon bbq sauce that was amazing.

      1. Not doing ribs, but Prime Rib. He wants to lightly season before smoking. When it is just shy of being done, I will rub with a garlic and herb paste and then blast in a hot oven to crisp up the outside (a variant on a reverse sear method)

    1. Rosemary compound butter under the skin of the chicken makes for a fantastic pairing with smoke...

    2. I see no smokin' brews mentioned. 🙁

I see you guys feature at least one Copper Trail beer. Mayhap a keg of Cabin Retreat?

      1. He is a home brewer of sorts, but that has not worked it's way into his business model... yet.

    1. Three years seems fine to me.

      1. I don't see it as adding a traditional closer but depth in the bullpen. I'm not upset about it though. It's not like this will be the only chance the Twins had to upgrade the bullpen.

          1. My thoughts on the bullpen: I think in the off season they made minor moves to create a decent bullpen. They spent bigger money on position players. Not sure if they wanted to put big dollars in the pen in case they did not start out in a winning fashion. The bullpen is the one area in which a club can upgrade mid-season. They were probably hoping a few prospects would emerge to fill in the few gaps they have. Since that has not happened, I would be surprised if they do not grab a few very solid arms through the rent-a-pitcher option. I was not big on Kimbrell due to his second half and playoff performance last year. I envision them targeting a end of game right handed arm to complement Rogers and another solid lefty for the middle innings.

            1. I wouldn't mind the Twins getting a top line starter and then move Pineda to the bullpen either. But doesn't solve the need for a lefty.

              1. I do wonder if they make the playoffs, will they go with a 3 man rotation of Odorizzi, Berrios and Gibby? If that is the case, I could see Perez as a solid lefty option out of the pen.

              2. I like CH's suggestion of acquiring Greinke. The big contract means he'll practically be free in terms of prospects if the Twins don't mind taking on all/most of his contract.
