July 29, 2019: Mischief Managed

Many thanks to zooom.x for coming down to Chi-Town. Apologies I was only able to hang out for approximately 3.6 seconds. Also, thanks to fan of the game DG for hanging out too. By the way, Obon is apparently next weekend if you're available.

    1. I always liked him, and really wished he'd gotten his cup of coffee. I was trying to find my photo of Loek towering over everyone leaning on the dugout railing in a Spring Training game, but unfortunately I didn't see it anywhere. I did find this program though, with autos from Dan Rohlfing, Mitch Garver, and Max Kepler, and photo of the game's winning pitcher:

          1. Yup, checked over lunch. Now down to $185, before fees. May check back closer to game but probably not.

  1. The next team up on the HR Parade are the 2017 Twins -- it seems like just last year...

    • HR leaders: Dozier 34 (t10), Sano 28, Rosario 27, Escobar 21, Kepler 19, Buxton 16, Polanco 13, Vargas 11, Castro 10
    • grand slams: Dozier 1, Kepler 1, Mauer 1, Rosario 1
    • inside-the-park HR: Dozier 1, Buxton 1
    • PH HR: Castro 1, Gimenez 1, Vargas 1
    • home/road: 110/96 -- home: Rosario 20, Dozier 18; road: Dozier 16, Sano 16
    • RH/LH: 159/47 -- Rosario 25/2, Dozier 23/11, Sano 21/7, Kepler 17/2
        1. Castro has 5 times as many PAs vs. righties than lefties. Garver is so good overall and especially against lefties that Castro is pretty much a platoon guy except for when Garver is hurt and/or recovering from playing the day before.

      1. Reminded me of when Cristian Guzman did something similar in the Dome. I wanted to see if it was just on one throwing error like Dozier. However, I couldn't find that but found video of him hitting for the cycle for the Nats. It was against the Dodgers in a game Kershaw started. The funny part was, on his single in his second at-bat, Guzman tried to stretch it to a double. If he had been successful, he would not have hit for the cycle but instead would have had 4 extra-base hits.

  2. Speaking of dongers, I just noticed that first HR yesterday landed exactly where our seats were. Everyone was still enjoying free food and drink at the time though...

  3. My father's cousin runs a garlic company in Gilroy, California and participates in the local garlic festival every year. He and his son were fewer 100 yards from the shooter.

Couple that with the fact that my brother used to go to the Borderland Bar and Grill for happy hours throughout college. It's getting way too personal.

Do we just truly not care? Is there ever going to be a point where we say enough? What is wrong with us?

      1. Part of our continued thoughts about moving to Spain include living somewhere where this just doesn't happen. It's not the only reason, but it's definitely one of them.

          1. Ah yes, wherein I claimed that no one has ever been violently murdered in terrorist-free Spain. C'mon, bS, you're better than that.

            Spain has less than 1% of the guns there are in the US (3,464,000 v. 393,347,000), which even adjusted per 100 people is only 6% (7.5 v. 120.5). {1}

            Spain has 0.57 gun deaths per 100K population vs. the US's 12.2 per 100K (2015) - {2},{3}

I had trouble finding - though I'm not claiming zero, just that I didn't find any - mass shootings in Spain that were not connected to the Basque terrorists/separatists ETA, and they disarmed about 8-10 years ago.

Anecdotally, I don't like living where my wife is afraid to go to church because she feels trapped. I don't like living where lord knows who has a gun in their glovebox and will shoot you for cutting them off.

Overall, is the chance I die by firearm very small? Yes it is. Is that chance even smaller in other places around the world? Yes again.

            1. 'twas half in jest.

I will say that while the violent crime rate in the US may be higher than the rates in much of Europe, objectively, the US is very safe. I am no fan of America's gun fetish, but it is not useful to infer high levels of risk from rare (albeit horrifying) events.

              1. Sorry for coming at you hard. I've been a little cranky the last few days, and should have tempered my reaction.

It's not the mass shootings that get into my head, though they get the national headlines. It's stuff like https://kstp.com/news/shooting-school-bus-driver-interstate-35w-minneapolis-video-mndot/5236693/ that just happens without rhyme or reason beyond it seeming like every problem is a nail and everyone has a gun for a hammer (I tortured the hell out of that, but you get it).

                  1. Also, one of the takeaways, albeit not super obvious, from that graphic: the US has a suicide problem relative to many of its peers. Note that our data point is above the 45-deg line, indicating that the ratio of deaths by suicide to deaths by violence is greater than one, while we are well to the right of the string of data points snaking upward on the suicide rate measure near zero on the violent death measure. We are a more violent society than most Western, industrialized countries, and we have more suicides than homicides.

BOTH are associated with our national gun fetish (although guns isn't the only answer).

                    1. That's precisely why I do not own any firearms. There's a very real chance I wouldn't be here if I had had easy access in some of my darker times before I started addressing my mental health.

                  2. You guys handled this thread better than I handled a hot issue a while back. I just wanted to say that I noticed this, that I’m glad it didn’t snowball, and that I’ve tried to consistently apply what I learn from my mistake.

                    1. on my Nextdoor App, one of my neighbors posted about a murder in Maple Grove and just went off on how the mayor needs to be fired, the city is wasting their money on PARKS because kids aren't playing there from November to March, and how it would be better with a cop on every corner otherwise we'll just become Brooklyn Park.

Ten guesses to this dude's race.

    1. Damn. That is too few degrees of separation. And what Stick said. This country has a sickness.

    1. Huh, didn't know about this:

Parker is still a bit shy of five years of MLB service time, meaning his decision to opt for free agency will actually result in him surrendering the remainder of that contract in exchange for a return to the open market.

      1. Presumably the Marlins need a reliever...

Actually, I wouldn’t mind if Parker signs with whatever AL Central club the Twins have the most remaining games against, so the Twins offense can help more accurately adjust his rate stats to league average.

  4. We have a nice raspberry patch in the garden. I think Newbish and the waxwings have a pact in place to each take 50%.

      1. We had a museum (or, apparently "ear-full") of waxwings move through our yard a couple times this year. After having never knowingly seen them before, that was really cool.

Unfortunately, the tree they liked was this one.
