October 24, 2019: Wiggin Out

Congrats to the T-Wolves on their season opening win, accomplished in true Wigginsy fashion:

"I am coasting off the good vibes of two back to back great readings & the good vibes of getting to be home in a few hours & the good vibes of the Timberwolves being 1-0

but make no mistake, I can't stop thinking about Wiggins scoring 21 points on 27 shots without a single assist. the thing with Wiggins is that he shoots way too much and misses way too much but he makes JUST ENOUGH shots to give him the confidence to keep shooting. which is dangerous. Same energy that has kept Weezer making songs for YEARS"

  1. Salt River gave up a four-run fifth and lost to Glendale 6-5. The Rafters are 16-11 and have clinched the division. They will play Surprise Saturday for the league championship.

Jovani Moran pitched a perfect inning and struck out two. His ERA is 7.00 and his WHIP is 2.11. He has struck out 14 and walked 12 in 9 innings.

Aguilas gave up a three-run eighth and lost to Escogido 5-4. Wilin Rosario was 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. He is batting .237/.351/.364 in 33 at-bats.

  2. Cron underwent thumb surgery yesterday. He had a 103 OPS+ last year, even post-concussion Mauer managed 105 OPS+ over his years. He had a .821 OPS in the first half before the injury and a .700 after while playing through it at times. August was a rebound at .832 but then he dropped to a .487 OPS in September. Overall he was worth 1.4 rWAR and that's around to slightly above the $7.7 million he is expected to receive in his final year of arbitration.

    1. My understanding is it actually was hurt early in the season but I imagine it got worse as the season went along. Brent Rooker had a .400 wOBA in AAA last year, so Cron's return might be more about if the Twins think Rooker is ready to be handed the first base job. Also, they might want to consider using Mitch Garver at first base when he's not catching. And of course, Marwin Gonzalez and La Tortuga can both play there as well.

  3. 21 years married today for this guy. The day is tempered with the fact that the wife is going in for surgery for some womanly issues tomorrow. Not a very big deal, but first time she has had surgery of any kind, so we both are a bit nervous. She really doesn't want anyone to know, so I decided to place these thought here since no one is likely to run into her in the near future.

    1. I don't know your specifics, obviously, but I can share that Philosofette needed a hysterectomy this past summer, so on at least some level we've been there.. It wasn't an easy surgery for her at first, but physically she got better relatively quickly. It was somewhat emotional though. My best to you and your wife for that. And congrats on 21 years!

      1. Wishing you both (and your wives) well. Mrs. Hayes had a similarly significant (though not female anatomy-specific) emergency surgery this summer. Hope both of your partners experience the full therapeutic benefit of the surgeries, and have hiccup-free recoveries.

    2. Congrats on the milestone! (Lessee, I think 21 is Cracker Jacks?)

Best of luck on the surgery.

    3. Thanks all for the congrats and well wishes. Made her a killer shrimp and scallops pasta with a bottle of Chateau St. Michelle Pinot Gris. Now sitting on the couch with our daughter who is home from college. Some Vikes and Wild before bed. Life is good.

      1. Congratulations and ... what these folks said. I’ll be mindful tomorrow on y’all’s behalf.

      1. "Somewhat of a surprise nomination: Robbie Grossman for his play in left field this season. Grossman wasn’t particularly flashy, but was statistically sound throughout the season. He remained in the top ranks of the SABR Defensive Index. He finished the season with a 5.8 SDI — the best by a significant margin among AL left fielders and did not make an error in 129 games. Kansas City’s Alex Gordon finished behind him with a .2 SDI with a 3.2 UZR. Boston’s Andrew Benintendi, the third nominee, had a -3.8 SDI, third-worst in the AL, though he had a fourth-best 1.4 UZR.

Grossman told me in July that a minor adjustment to his posture in the outfield: instead of crouching, he just stood up straight. That gave him a much better jump, which is a major part of the SDI calculation.

“Before I’d get low to the ground because you think, it’s like you’re guarding someone in basketball — get in a good position,” Grossman told me in Minneapolis. “Same thing with stealing a base, I found out that the lower I am to the ground, my first move is to stand straight up. I was doing the same thing in the outfield.”

Grossman would be the A’s first outfielder since Josh Reddick in 2012 to win a Gold Glove.

      1. At this point, it really just feels like they're appeasing the critics instead of admitting he did something wrong.

Now that he's damaged goods, I'm sure some other team will scoop him up for a discounted price.

              1. You had the right idea but need to make it a shortcode by wrapping with brackets: [onewgom]. I'm hesitant to add more buttons because of space, but perhaps could swap with the "Send Him!!!" shortcode. Everyone is too honest on the basepaths.

                1. I think you should leave it ’difficult’ to reward comments with the Basement Cryptocurrency. A button to willy-nilly offer Bucks only serves to devalue the asset.

  4. Rowson now a Marlin.

    1. I was hoping they could keep Rowson in Minnesota. I get why he’d take a new position, but it would’ve been good to have him back in some capacity (bench coach if Shelton left?). Now it seems there might be at least two significant vacancies on the staff, assuming Shelton gets an offer from the Pirates or Mets.
