  1. Salt River and Mesa played to a nine-inning scoreless tie. There are ties in baseball, at least in the AFL. The Rafters are 16-11-1 and have clinched the division. They will play Surprise for the league championship Saturday.

Royce Lewis was 1-for-4. He is batting .354/.413/.573 in 82 at-bats.
Luke Raley was 0-for-3. He is batting .241/.311/.443 in 79 at-bats.
Zach Neff pitched a perfect inning. His ERA is 1.38 and his WHIP is 0.54. He has 12 strikeouts and 1 walk in 13 innings.

No Twins played in winter league games yesterday.

  2. Disappointed though I am to see Rowson leave for the Marlins (barf), I’m quite curious to see how the team fills the vacancy on Rocco’s staff.

I’m also assuming that Shelton will get offered the job in Pittsburgh, which opens the door for shuffling the staff a bit more. One could imagine Bill Evers becoming the bench coach while continuing to work with the catchers specifically, which would give them room for another new wave coaching position (analytics coach, field coordinator, quality assurance, etc.).

  3. Now that Topps has taken to using the squared "C" for the Indians logo instead of redacted, regardless of their different styles I find it confusing when the Cubs and Reds also use a "C" logo. At least the Astros put a star behind their "A" to separate it from the Angels. Actually, the Milwaukee and the Marlins "M" are also confusing at first glance -- the Mariners use their compass logo.

  4. Surprise trip to a Center City beats surprise trip to Children's Hospital ER overnight. Big thanks to Mama Young for coming over last night to let the Valet continue sleeping unawares. Big thanks also to Papa Young for babysitting the Justice today so I could groggily drive to Rochester to take two depositions I couldn't reschedule.

    1. man, i wish we had family around here. we both had columbus day off but sent the kids to day care to have our first hours alone in months and months. we... cleaned the garage. it was pretty wild.

hope everyone is well in the pirate household.

  5. October 25 -- a bad day for Minnesota:

2015 -- Death of Flip Saunders
2002 -- Death of Paul Wellstone
1964 -- Jim Marshall's wrong way fumble return

    1. Appropriate, given the name of the surgeon, that the Jets have basically told him, "You're fired.'

      1. Also, I just realized the actor who says that line in the movie is now most frequently in the news for playing someone famous for using that line in a completely different context.

  6. On the Skillet

    Dried cranberries
    Luxardo cherries
    Duck Magret
    Balsalmic vinegar
    Red wine
    Shallots

Rehydrate dried cranberries in some water. Boil tiny potatoes until they are done, and set aside.
Prep the Duck breast Magret by scoring with cross-hatch cuts through the fat. Sear in a skillet until the fat is rendered on the breast, and on the other side for 4-5 minutes. I prefer rare-med.rare duck. OK rare.
Pour out most of the duck fat into a saved yoghurt jar (Oui), then fry the potatoes until Rosti-like.
In the same skillet, under med-high heat, reduce cranberries/wine/Luxardo cherries+juice, some chopped shallots, and Balsalmic vinegar.
Serve with Rosti and wild rice.
