The 2020 WGOM Historical Baseball Draft

Hello!

As I mentioned in the Cup of Coffee on December 27:

Joe Posnanski is counting down his Top 100 players of all-time in 100 days. Today he posted Mariano Rivera with #91 and while the comments of course are all over the place, one person said, "If all 30 teams started drafting from history right now to make their teams, Rivera would not be taken in the first three or four rounds."

I am proposing a just-for-kicks draft where anyone who joins get a 25 man roster to fill out with any players from baseball history.  The only rule is making the roster of reasonable construction (i.e. no drafting 7 catchers or 22 pitchers).

Each round of the draft will get its own post and I'll keep a spreadsheet of whose been taken.  There'll be no stakes and no time limit. This is just for fun to see what people come up with and what they prioritize.  I am thinking we would do a snake draft.

Would like at least ten participants, and of course the more the better!

What kind of draft should we do?

  • Snake Draft (82%, 9 Votes)
  • Standard Draft (18%, 2 Votes)

Total Voters: 11

  1. I am thinking we would do a snake draft.

Snake drafts result in unequal distribution of picks. This doesn't matter so I ultimately don't care but I think a regular draft would be simpler for scheduling and raging against the same person for draft-blocking you.

    And sure, I'll participate.

        1. How is that preferable to a snake draft? Is the uneven distribution claim based on the relative value of 1st round/3rd round/etc. first picks vs. 2nd/4th/etc. first picks?

Does that type of approach apply in an historic draft? It doesn't seem like it would, with a much deeper talent pool.

          1. My thought is that a snake draft is more suited to a league done in real time with real time rosters that have a very limited number of players available. But when your draft pool is all players ever, it's less of an issue for those lower in the order to put together a good team.

          2. I had to go refresh my memory because it's been a while. A regular draft strongly favors the early drafters while a snake draft sightly favors the early drafters. It is still unequal but less so. I remain indifferent because the results don't matter and we're drafting based off career value.

                    1. Last weekend I did the public address announcing for the local high school basketball team. The other team had a player with the last name Lajoie. He did, in fact, pronounce it "la-Joey".
