March 19, 2020: Many Hats

For a time yesterday, I was running a daycare, teaching 3rd grade, lunch lady, and trying to complete my own work in the gaps. Next couple weeks are going to be interesting.

    1. There was a slowdown this morning due to a busy firewall; they balanced things and work returned to "normal" for everyone again. Was interesting seeing everyone's office in our teleconference this morning.

  1. Greetings from the Austin, Texas, airport, which is eerily quiet. Our trip consisted of time with Mr. NaCl's sister and her husband and teenage son (whom the boys adore) and visits to playgrounds and walks/hikes outdoors. All the time in nature was really nice, but odd in light of all that's going on and with things changing by the day. Every so often one of the adults would check their phone and then say "oh crap" or some variation thereof as we got a message from work that needed to be addressed.

I've been checking in here in the evening and reading everyone's updates. I appreciate hearing how everyone is doing and what things are like right now. Next week Mr. NaCl and I will be working from home while the boys are out of school, though my parents have already asked for topics they'd like to learn about so they can keep them busy.

    Sending well wishes to all.

    1. I flew in and out of AUS pretty regularly when I lived there. It's a pretty efficient airport even on a Friday afternoon. I can't imagine it right now.

  2. Reminder that today is the last day to join the NCAA Replacement Tournament.

  3. Took a long walk today and circled by my institution in the quarter. Stopped by my everyday coffee shop to get one last cup and tip the baristas. The quarter is a ghost town in a very different way than when a hurricane is bearing down on the city. Everything is boarded up as though the quarter is expecting the possibility of looting. The sight really disturbed me.

  4. BR updated their WAR numbers a few days ago. Most of the changes were either minor or affected players from pre-integration. However, BR added more fielding numbers from DRS and this had a noticeable impact on 2019. Mike Trout led the league in rWAR and won the MVP. The fielding update however added an additional 1.6 wins to Matt Chapman, putting him 0.1 wins ahead of Trout. Marcus Semien had a smaller increase of 0.7 wins but he was already tied with Trout and now is ahead of both at 8.9 wins. While these updates are good, it also makes previous voters look bad in voting.

    1. if it changes a lead by less than a full win I'm not sure it'll make anyone look bad. There's way less vitriol if a past winner was 3rd in WAR then if it was, say, Juan Gonzalez

  5. We have Wednesday night services during Lent, so last night was our first livestreamed service. We have things to learn, but given that we only decided to do this two days earlier, and given that none of us had any experience with livestreaming anything, I thought it went fairly well. Hopefully we'll do better for our Sunday morning service.

          1. You'll have to ask the Padre for it, but I'll set it up if he shares the link and time

            1. 11:00 Central is when the service starts. I also hope to livestream a Sunday evening service at 7:00 Central.

    1. Pro tip: If you live anywhere where it ever rains, don't get a Golden Retriever dog.

At least we have the time to walk the dogs a few times a day now so they don't really destroy the yard on a day like today.

I'm thinking it is time to put down some artificial grass in the little fenced in area outside of the garage, at least that will give them a place to run around and play a little without ripping up the yard and covering themselves in mud. It is pretty much grass-free at this point and gets very little sun in the summer so re-growing will be a challenge.

      1. She's been going out to the garden and laying down to chew on whatever grassy items are out there. On a side note, our carpets need cleaning and I'm going to have to take another shower.

    2. Golden/Aussie mix. Came in. We cleaned her up. Then she stood in front of the door and whined and barked to go out for the next hour.

I finally just took her on a mile walk.

  6. So, the Mrs is on a call right now with the Girl, trying to decide whether she comes home from Russia. 🤷‍♂️

    1. Sheenie and I are scheduled to visit the Ukraine* and Israel in late October. May I borrow that emoji?

*all jokes about us bumping into Rudy's bumbling henchmen are, of course, expected and encouraged

  7. In these days of mandatory telecommuting, getting an email from HR saying (essentially) I don't take enough time off sure feels weird.

    1. Subscribers up 430% in the last 30 days. They have 662k right now. They gained 23k on Monday alone and 54k since then.

    2. Newbish got a racetrack for his Hot Wheels cars upon which you can race up to six cars at once. It has contacts at the bottom and a little voice which tells you which car won.

You'd best believe I had a full NCAA style bracket set up for that by the end of day one.

  8. Got a bit stir crazy in the home office and took a walk. Beautiful day here. Understandably quiet. I walked to the bank and got cash from the cash machine for when the credit card system collapses 🙄

And then walked over to my neighborhood microbrewery (carry-out only right now) and bought a couple crowlers. The young woman tending said that a lot of the regulars had been through to purchase beer, so they were doing ok.

I expect we will up our consumption of carryout from local eateries and our donations to the local food banks. And wait for the wave to crest.
