      1. This even seems like a stretch for an unwritten rule. I know there are unwritten rules around, say, not bunting or putting on a hit and run in situations like that, but not swinging on 3-0 counts has always been a guideline for the benefit of the hitter, not the pitcher, and I've never before heard of it being linked to the scoreboard.

  1. Okay we have the e-6 bat signal, the twayn truck fire, so what's the help desk sean phone number?

I added a (forgive me my mac sins, we'll talk about that later) airport express to extend the range knowing that the troughput would be cut in approximately half. Now that I'm stuck at home and the good doctor is teaching full time from home the added signal strength with slower speed isn't cutting the cheese. Ideas? Cost effective ideas? I've contemplated running a cat 5 line from my router out the cable hole in my house, under the house to the back and then running the line in through an exposed outlet (clear as mud - drilling through the exterior of my house to make a diy ethernet port in the back of the house) as a way to hard wire the dr.s laptop to the interwebs. Though I'd like to have wifi out back as we're doing a lot of zoom calling from the porch....

Other idea was to move the router to the center hall. I've hard wired the tv, and main computer already, just would need longer cat5 lines and figure out a power source in the hall. I've also started thinking of paying for more speed from cox, though I hate the idea of giving those tools any more money.....

    1. What internet speeds do you have? Doing video a lot requires consistent upload and many routers handle running at capacity poorly. That could be an easy fix if you're at the bottom tier.

bS would advise Powerline Ethernet. My preference would be mesh networking. If you have old or poor electrical wiring, then mesh is likely your only option. On the other hand, Powerline will give you better everything at the risk of potential interference from other devices.

Running Ethernet cable is always the best but having to run new wires is often complicated.

      1. I'm on the middle tier at 150 mbs. Upgrading to 500 is around 9 bucks a month whereas upgrading to gigablast is 20 bucks a month.

          1. Our router supports 802.11 ac, Dr. Chops laptop does as well. Just so we're clear, I'm a Luddite - I studied 18th century technology ... poorly.

              1. Yes, I had to do that with the old desktop.

The powerline adapter is inconsistent. Sometimes I have Ethernet through it. Sometimes it just boosts wifi. I do not understand that.

But 150 Mbs should be more than enough to support two of you at high speed, no? WiFi extender might be enough.

                1. Check what other appliances are running. I don't know how sensitive they are to voltage sags either.

    2. Long and short --> I moved the router to the hallway of our single shotgun. Better reception in the back of the house and not nonexistent in the back yard. Dr.Chop says not worth the effort of permanently moving the router and working the cables through the walls. We'll just suffer through.

      1. Our local theater (Mann) took one of the big indoor screens and mounted it outdoors on the wall, built a projection booth and is doing weekend drive-in movies in the parking lot. Concession stand and restrooms are open. Older movies, but who watches the movies at a drive-in, right?

  2. Also, to chefs in the nation, anyone interested in a all clad master chef 110 stainless saute pan? I'm down to trade for beer or just good vibes. Ask jobu how fast I ship. (spoiler, its slower than molasses).

      1. zach money, hit me up zero zero 2 shores ats the gmizzel . comizzle. We'll work out the terms of this deal.

  3. I did a very dad thing today. I installed a new starter in my daughter’s car in the parking lot of the bank’s operation center in Plymouth. Subaru Forester so top down access - pull the airbox, disconnect wires, two mounting bolts, easy peasy. My forearms are fairly raw from the tight quarters, though.

    1. I am the proud owner payer off er of a white person car. I overheard the oil change guy say, "damn, i love when a subaru comes in, everything is so easy to access and designed well."

      I chuckled.

      1. Boxer engines are a nice diversion. You might want to invest in an engine code reader, I know older Subarus tend to throw a lot of check engine lights, the sensors are pretty sensitive. I guess false alarms are better than bricked engines, though.

            1. Huge-o Subaru fan here - owner of a Forester from 2004-2018, then donated it to my collegiate niece. Best car for New England (and our driveway).

              1. My parents have a Subaru, 2018 (17?) Outback. I've borrowed it once or twice and I loved it.

Definitely on the list for when the Focus craps out for good.

                1. I'm a big fan of the crosstrek. The outback will be for when I need another vehicle and this current one is dead. That might not happen until after I'm dead.

        1. I like sitting outside and hearing a boxer come down our gravel road and say to my wife "There's a Subaru coming" Eye roll every time.

      2. I was pretty happy about being able to change the lights in our '09 Outback. Seems like manufacturers are making that kind of maintenance harder and harder without specialized tools.

  4. In super solid news I'm covid free as of 430 pm central time! I may have contracted it since then, but for now I'm going to celebrate by .... staying inside.

    1. w00t!

I was the Designated Survivor today at the office.

By gubernatorial order, state offices closed at 3pm yesterday and today (and tomorrow) to "conserve energy" and help minimize odds of rolling blackouts during the Hellscape.

        1. Yes, and we have ash falling from the sky thanks to fires.

At least the oppressive heat is keeping people home.

            1. The skies have been very unsettling the last two days. Overcast, ashy smell and taste in the air.

Oh, and a hundred billion degrees. You can taste the carbon splitting from the dioxide.

              1. We are between two fires right now. Close enough we can see the giant smoke clouds, but far enough away that we don't have any ash or smokey smell at the moment. But the heat? We've definitely got that, plus a weird amount of humidity.

When I was walking the dog today, it felt like one of those hot, humid, muggy midwest afternoons where everything is uncomfortable, and a line of thunder storms is going to put on a show later that night. Felt very much like when we'd visit my family in southern Iowa for 4th of July.

Checked the weather app, and it was 95 and humid. Too bad it was only 7:30 am. Woof.

          1. Holy crap! I guess this begs the question of what wood chips are you using to smoke the pork butt today?

  5. Good news on the home front. Older hermano Coot, who went into the ER a week ago without being able to swallow, is getting checked out out today for rehab. He can now swallow and has had three meals so far. They are ascribing it to a micro-stroke that affected the muscles in his throat.
Still wobbly on his feet, but OT should take him to where he needs to be.
