2020 Game 38: Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins

Reynaldo López
vs
José Berríos

A much needed win last night. FanGraphs still has them at 94.9% chance to make the postseason but now as a wildcard instead of the division winner. There are a lot more needed wins over Chicago and Cleveland if they want to win the division.

Josh Donaldson should be activated for tonight's game too. Time for him to start hitting.

  1. Ill miss Bert on TV. I enjoyed his calls. Not sure if he was forced out if so I think he deserved better. If retiring on his own well either away I hope he enjoys it.

    1. Mentioned it in the cup, but yeah, pretty sure he was pushed out. This could have been where I remembered that from:

Earlier on Monday, Blyleven tweeted that he was selling his condo in downtown Minneapolis, prompting a question of whether he was leaving the booth.

He replied to that: “Actually the Twins/FSN offered me less games for the next 2 seasons because they said they are going in another direction. I agreed to their request. Go Twins!”

      1. I wonder if it’s a little of both. Bert certainly had a prickly personality about things like this when he was a player. People do change, of course, and if he felt upset about reduction of his games it seems he’s kept pretty quiet about it recently. He has to know his time in the booth couldn’t go on forever, although I suppose he might’ve expected more deference to his wishes given his stature and precedent set by other broadcasters’ retirements. So, I guess I could see the Twins wanting to change the composition of the crew, Bert feeling disrespected, and not going out of his way to participate in what might feel patronizing right now.

        1. I haven't really disliked any of the new color guys they've rotated about the last couple years but none of them seem to be heads and shoulders better than Bert IMO.

  2. So the last three primary color men were Blyleven (287 career wins), Tommy John (288 career wins), and Jim Kaat (283 career wins). That means the Twins need to do a full court press to get Ferguson Jenkins in the booth for 2021.

  3. Im not the biggest fan of Bert (too much back in my day, and Ive heard all his schtick 100 times among other things) but since they have rotated analysts I am more indifferent to him to almost like him. He may not had liked the reduced games (judging by his twitter feed he wanted to do more games I think he is being a bit forced out) but I think it made him a bit of a better broadcaster and his story have a little more life.4
I wouldnt be opposed if he still did a few series a year, like a Jim Kaat style set up.
